TheOldGrayMare - 2016-03-24 12:16 PM I'm glad that once they have been raced/shown/bred you cannot change their name. As a breeder, I don't like that someone could change the name - then I will have a hard time tracking the horse in the future.

hmm, my cousin didn't have a problem changing her mares name and she has been to plenty of barrel races within the year it's taken to get it changed.

I'm sure she was referring to AQHA events only. Anything else you can change the name, which is sad because equistat can't keep up with them.

Rodeos or jackpots do not matter.

Got it, I realized that is what she was probably meaning after I responded.

I'm probably the odd one out here too, but I completely agree. I also like to keep tabs on them, etc. I have a friend who changes every horse she buys. Personally, it drives me batty. Granted, I understand its your horse, do what you want. But I also felt it was a slap in the face when she bought one from our program and changed it. To me that's saying "sorry, your name choice isn't good enough". She also never plans to show or breed, so why is the registered name that important when he goes by a barn name of her choice? If you want to pick a registered name, breed one or buy a weanling. I feel that the breeder has put the time, money and effort into putting the foal on the ground, and therefore have earned the right to name it.

I had never changed a name until recently. Nice colt with a name that had to have been cooked up after way too many beers. Frankly embarrassing and didn't even include the nice bloodline the colt had.

I changed it before he'd ever been entered.
