Location: Monroe, GA | Have a mare I'm about to start really working. She was born with me, patterned and exhibitioned some as a 4 year old, then life got in the way and right when she was ready to add speed she ended up getting tossed in a pasture and not ridden and here we are lol.
I have to leg her back up and start her back slow, but she always did better in a hackamores. She is good in a bit, gives her nose, does what she is supposed to but she chomps, pins her ears, and is just generally not happy in a bit. I have trail ride her some over the last couple years here and there and threw a hack on her several of those times and it made a big big difference in her happiness and willingness.
But I've never worked barrels much in a hack. I have ran finished horses in a hack, but not tuned or anything. So is there a hackamores that has enough bend/flex, Etc to really work her in?
Sorry for writing a book! All suggestions welcome! Also her teeth have been done multiple times should not be teeth as the reason she doesn't like bits. |

Location: Arizona | I ran barrels in the Little S on one of my mares, but couldn't use it everyday or I found she stopped respecting it & wanted to lean against the noseband almost like a tie down. I used a bit for tuning & a regular mechanical hack for trail riding. I do like the Little S a lot for barrels, it gave me a good amount of lift and bend. But in my experience horses can become dull to it if used everyday. |

Location: MN | I ran a mare who was the same way. She tuned just fine in a bit but she hated to be run in a bit. My go-to fr her was an Ugly Bit (really a hack). For small indoord pens when I needed her to stay more freed up I used a Pozzi hack. |

| What sort of bit did you work her in? I have a gelding who runs in a Jim Warner, but I work him in a chain mouth bit on occasion. He just does better in the JW for running, since he's so overly sensitive.
He accepts mullen mouth bits (solid) for some slow work, but HATES snaffles and 3 piece dogbone bits. He accepts chain mouth bits better than the mullen mouth and I find they are just softer in general. He has a narrow palate, so Snaffles really gouged his mouth and hurt his lower jaw as well. The chain conforms to him. |

Location: South | Nearly all my horses run in a form of a hackamore. My finished horse is rode during the week in a Jim Warner Hack but ran in a Rosalie Turley hack. Pretty much the same but a different nose piece. I have a three year old that I am currently hauling and exhibitioning and I'm also riding her in the RT Hack as well. She didn't really take to the JW like I would have liked ( I was riding her in an O ring before) . I love riding in hacks, but just go with one that gives you the right "feel". I can add the picture of the Turley hack if you are interested.
Edited to add- my 3 year old is more flexible now than when I rode her in an O ring. But it is all how you teach them in it.

Location: Monroe, GA | Thanks for the tip! I have ridden her in a variety of snaffle and gag bits with broken or 3 piece mouthpieces. Did not think about low palate and chain or Mullen! Might definitely look into that I have a couple chain mouth bits!!
other than the hackamores I most recently had her in a jr cow horse and similar small gag bits |

Location: South | It is a custom design really on found in central AR. You could easily make one out of an old JW- just replace the rope nose with a tubed chain. It just creates a different "feel" that most like. |
