So I've been contemplating starting to wear a helmet.  I've been riding since I was 2, now at 31, I've had my first broken bone from a fall off my horse.  I guess I've been very fortunant for this to be the case.  Anyway does anyone have opinion on Resistol Ridesafe, the helmet hat verses the Troxel Liberty helmet?  My next question is I wear a 7 1/4 hat so should I go to a large being a medium goes to a 7 1/4?

I'm interested in everyone's opinion as well. I like the Resistol helmets, because they look like hats. However, they are very pricey compared to the helmets. When you have 3 or 4 to buy for in the family, I'd like to be reasonable.

Personally, I like to keep my helmets in the affordable price range because you should replace them after a fall and every so many years (not sure on the exact time frame to be honest, without a fall I usually replace mine yearly as that's about how long it takes for the padding to get gross and start to make me breakout on my forehead) since the materials will start to break down.

I can easily go do that with a $60-$80 Troxel I can pick up at the local Fleet Farm.

Those Resistol hats/helmets are $245. I was just at Joseys last week and they had the sizes so you could pre order.

Did you happen to try one on?  Do they feel heavy or bulky?

I did try one on and it felt good but maybe not $245 good. I already wear a helmet.

That's were I'm torn if I want to spend that much or buy a regular helmet.  What brand do you currently wear, if you don't mind me asking?  I kind of have had the bug to wear one but just don't even know where to start.

The Ride Safe is very comfortable. I've tried the Troxel helmets and they aren't nearly as comfortable. I also have a Defender K One and it's super comfortable with lots of vents to help keep you cooler. They both cost a little more but the comfort level is important if you plan on wearing it for more than a few minutes.

You need to go and try a bunch of them on. If it's not comfortable you're not going to wear it. The Tipperary Sportage fits me the best. I had 2 Troxel's before that and they were uncomfortable so I would end up taking it off and hanging it on my saddle horn.

I wear a Troxel Sierra. Troxel recommended that you get a new helmet every five years which I do.

I will be using the Ridesafe from Resistol.. They are giving 6 Ridesafe Helmet certificates to the Fort Smith, Arkansas Futurity and Super Derby, 4 to the Futurity and Derby and 2 to the barrel race the weekend before! They are also giving 4 Resistol straw hat certificates to the Futurity and Derby!! They are great sponsors.. We thank them so much for donating these!!

Awesome input.  Thank you all so much.  I at least have some direction to start.  I have heard Resistol put a lot of research into their helmets withstanding rodeo accidents & tailored them to rodeo not just riding or English.  I will definitely try some on & go from there.

Something you could do is look at one from a place that will let you return them and if you don't like how it feels or weighs on you then you could just give it back.

I just got mine last week and I had pre-ordered it in late January. I did the measuring that showed on the website. It said I should get an extra small and I was worried it wouldn't fit. I did get it in, it fit perfectly, comes with pads for adjustment and I like the quality of the hat.  Not sure about the chin strap but I am happy with it.  A good hat can be expensive so I look at it, that I got 2 for 1 deal.

That's what I was thinking on the price.  I really like that it still has the look of a hat.  Thanks for your input.
