I'm 5'3" and my 5 year old is 16.1 pushing 16.2. Β I have him broke to stand next to what ever in case I'm not by my mounting block. Β Tractor buckets, picnic tables, fenders, fences, whatever happens to be close. Β AND maybe keep an extra pair of jeans in the truck, lol!Β
I second the jeans lol
ETA: I also got one of those grooming box/step combos and they are awesome. the step goes over the tote and the top of the tote handle pokes up through the step. I like it for races because I stick my boots, drink, phone, keys, extra reins etc. in it and pack it up to the warm up area with me and even though I know it's not secure if someone was looking for something to steal, at least its not sitting out in plain sight getting dirt etc. kicked onto it and inviting sticky fingers. Easy access to what I need and easy way onto my horse.

everyone should try to use a step or a stool or fence or anything to keep you from tugging and pulling the horses back out of whack.. its not always possible i know.. but when it is Id do it..

I have known several short girls riding tall horses. One thing that has stood out to me is they seem to fit a horse with a neck that is tied in more upright. I am guessing that it have to with angles and physics. You find a horse that fits you and you will find ways to get around the height.
