Well, haven't seen anyone lurking around the pasture, so I think we can rule out vampires...  Not sure about bats. Haven't seen them here, but that doesn't mean they are not here.  
It does look like a regular scrape, the thing I find curious are the 2 bloody dots.... They seem to be identical.... Of course he could just have ran into a fence or something... but would that make such a "neat" scrape.... I have no clue....thought is looked strange...

 I also posted on facebook and a friends horse actually has the same thing.... 
But most suggest a spider bite or snakebite.... We do have snakes around.. Ran over a ratsnake two months ago ( didn't see the lil bugger) and chopped a western diamond back in half last month. So that seems like the most likely suspect.
