Subject: Cribbing? Ulcers? Feed?

I just discovered my 2 year old gelding has started cribbing! Not just chewing the wood, but full out sucking air!

His dam was a cribber, but she wouldn't crib with a collar which she wore 24/7. I raised this colt from birth.

This colt has NEVER been stalled except for at feeding time for about 20 minutes.

He runs with two fillies on about 20 acres and has plenty of pasture that is fenced in hot wire/tape.

He has free choice mineral and salt and eats Purina Ultium Growth along with Purina Enrich Plus.

I am suspecting it's a combination of genetics and diet. I also am suspecting he has ulcers.

I have tried RG in the past and my horses just won't eat it. I tried an oat, corn, alfalfa pellet mix but they wasted half of it so I went back to the ultium growth. I'm looking into trying the Omnis Cubes???

I think I will treat him for ulcers and keep him on a prevention, but the market for these products is so overwhelming I don't know what to try!

I'm sending him for training in a couple months and need to be sure he doesn't have tummy issues before he goes.

Suggestions??? On best ulcer treatment and dietary changes?

Put him on GastroGard to get any ulcer issues resolved quickly.  Don't bother with anything else to start with. Ultium upset the stomach of my more sensitive (ulcer-prone) horses.  We try to have even our hard keepers on alfalfa primarily.  I've got an OTTB gelding who just is so sensitive to any bagged feed, period.  He gets only alfalfa and he does great on it alone.

GastroPLUS. It has a guarantee 45 days. Also affordable compared to most. I bought my first cribber in Feb. She looked to need some serious dietary changes, deworming, teeth, cribbing and ulcers going on. Not sure what caused what but I dewormed her & had her teeth done the first week I had her. She was given mineral which she ate like it was candy at first and I also treated her for ulcers. 2 weeks later she was a different horse. She is an interal worrier and I noticed when I brought her in to be bred, she would want to crib, the longer she was in the corral. Put her back on GastroPLUS and she backs off. Just repeated it again as she was in to be teased to see if she needed re-bred this past week.

The GastroPLUS! This stuff is amazing and works fabulously! I have had mixed results with it helping for cribbing. My friend bought it for her cribber because she thought maybe it was ulcers related and it was, sure enough he stopped cribbing. She told her friend who bought it and it helped reduce the cribbing 50%. So I think it just depends on if the horse has ulcers that are bugging it or not. Does he only crib while he is eating or around eating time?

I have a cribber, he has been treated for ulcers, is fed renew gold and alfalfa, out on 100 acres, stalled only for weather and he still cribs.  He is not bad, only cribs after eating or getting a treat.  I don't put on a collar on him since he is pretty mild.

If he has ulcers I would suggest a low starch feed like Ex Factor by Bluebonnet (follow feeding directions on any feed) and as much hay as the Boy could eat in a day.
Alfalfa is a hay that is really great at raising the PH level in the stomach and soothing it from ulcers. You can mix alfala CUBES (These have the highest percentage of hay compared to pellets or any other form of hay) and the feed together. Add a bit of water to it and he should eat it pretty well.
Try Aloe Vera in the gel form. I buy mine from the pharmacy at walmart. It's about $3 a gallon. My boy eats anything with aloe vera on it.
I use ITZ paste, Omeprezol, and Aloe Vera. ITZ paste is for before the show when I load him on the trailer. Omeprezol goes in him when we arrive and he gets a stall. And Aloe Vera is what I use to drench his feed instead of water.  (He also enjoys Bananas mashed up in his feed... Idk if those help him lol but he loves the flavor it gives his feed.

Thank you for your responses! What omeprazole product is the best bang for your buck? Has anyone used the pop rocks with success?

I have used it all for my 3 yr old....my opinion would be to not waste your money on other products, just use the straight omeprazole. After my filly was scoped....she had active bleeding ulcers, and had already been thru the normal regimen of ulcer gard, etc., they put her on 30cc for a month. Then 15 cc for a month and maintenance dose after that of 7cc. I have to keep it and use it on and off when she goes off feed....idk if this is something I'm going to have to live with or if she will get better with age....I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
