I Don't Brag Posts: 6960	Someone mentioned possible bad side effects....anyone know what those might be? Just had a vet yesterday suggest this as a possible thing to try on my 5 yr old that has been lame on and off since he was 2, due to an undetermined back issue. Chiropractic adjustment helps but only short term. Shock wave gave us a bit more time before his pain returned. This is something to try since xrays and body scan are unlikely to tell us exactly what is wrong and since he had tried to kick hubby in the face a myelogram or MRI are out of the question.

The only one I've heard/ read about is colicy symptoms following the shots being given. After speaking to two vets one said he'd just give banamine pre shots as a precaution, the other says to walk the horse immediately after for a while. I did both and had no issues.

pressure dripper Posts: 8699 Location: the end of the rainbow	My mare had some coffin bone damage (the vet believes concussive forces that caused the coffin bones in both front feet to look on x-ray almost exactly like a person with osteoporosis bones would look on x-ray)that was causing front foot soreness. Had our first os-phos dose in March. Was about 60% better within six weeks. Did a 2nd dose in June and she was about 90% better by August. I did a manufacturers recommended dose of adequan in August and honestly she feels better now than she has in over a year. I feel like I have her issues under control right now.

The biggest risk is bone fracture like what happened with women when they took the same drug. It was so bad it is no longer available for human use.

My vet said he initially didn't think it would work but is seeing some great results. Mine said its about 50/50 that we will see results. This is a last-ditch attempt to help her be comfortable. Unfortunately, she might be at the end of her treatment options. :(

This is a drug that was given for osteoporosis in people for a while. It raised risk of fractures for older women (60 plus) who took it for over 3 years. It also had a pretty significant risk of mandibular necrosis (i.e. jaw rotting/infection). Will these effects exist in horses too? No idea. It has not been around long enough to know. This is also an aged class of patients for people, not younger ones. And horses chemistry is different. And yes short term, some potential colic has been reported in studies. We decided to give it to one of ours. Currently she feels great on it. Hopefully it will last. It is NOT something I would want to use over and over long term.
