Subject: Help with 3rd barrel

I'm at a loss with my 7yr old gelding... He has beautiful turns on 1st and 2nd but is blowing of 3rd barrel. He does things perfectly just cruising but as soon as I ask for run he blows off. He does rate but then locks up coming in to the turn. I've had teeth done, been to the vet for a complete check over and did get his Hocks injected just because that was the only thing the vet thought might be giving him a little trouble. Been checked for ulcers but he is super chill and literally sleeps right up to your run if you let him. Chiro is up to date, been scoped for bleeding, I have tried numerous drills but like I said earlier he is perfect at slower speeds, is cowhorse broke (was a finished cutter) and is great until I ask for full out run. Any suggestions on what might be happening or what I might be doing?

A lot of horses will run a little free-er to the third barrel, so maybe you just need to ride him differently. You could try sitting a little earlier, picking him up for the turn before you get there, inside foot earlier, etc.

It could be that you are not finishing the turn and starting the run too soon.  I suggest having someone watch or video.

I dunno. If he can clock without finishing it, more power to him. Mary Burger's guy rarely finishes third and it hasn't seemed to make a difference one bit...

Sounds like he's not finishing the turn. You may be letting him go to quickly. Have you tried squares?

It's a drill. You could probably do a search on here and find it.

Just google training barrels horses for the square drill and youtube videos will come up showing you how to use this drill, and Connie Combs has a good write up on this drill also,

When my older horse started doing this I thought I needed to really help her more and started 'working' my 3rd barrel earlier in the approach, check her sooner, reach further down the inside rein, etc.  This didn't help her at all, made it worse.  Then someone better than me told me I was starting my process way too early and to run to the back of the barrel and let HER make the turn she was capable of making.  It was amazing.  She could really snap back with the extra room on the back side.
