| I just started running my mare after 3 months off... She was running sore for quite some time (years) and now we have found the problems and fixed them. She feels amazing and shes running harder than ever. I made my first two runs this past week...Both runs she has turned hard on the backside of first and came out the same side. She has NEVER done this before. I dont feel she is being rotten - I feel she is trying to be fast and gets ahead of herself. She used to refuse using her hind end and would drop hard in the front to make her turns. Now, I can start to feel her hind end engage, but she turns back. Any drills or recommendations to fix this? |

Location: Oklahoma | When my big (16,2+ hands) gelding did this twice, I realized it was caused by ME. I was pulling too hard and holding it too long coming around the back side of the barrel. After I realized this, I made a conscious effort to be more lighthanded and not hold the inside rein too long. He never did it again after I corrected myself. |

Location: sunny california | mine did this when his stifle was sticking. it ws his way of compensating and i have heard from others that their horse did this when the stifle was sticking. some very good vets missed it. sometimes it is hard to see. deep sand round pen, then it was so clear |

The first run I made she was going so fast I didnt think we were going to turn, so I did pull too hard. I chaulked that one up to me. The second run I stayed super light and didnt pull at all. I will definately make the conscious effort to watch that on myself for sure! |

If this happened a couple months ago, I would have maybe agreed... but, this mare is sound. I have had her to 3 different vets and we found what her issues all were and fixed them. She turning harder and firing faster than she ever has now. She really feels good! |

It wouldn't hurt to keep this on the back of your mind. Some very good vets missed mine all said he was solid as a rock. also would not hurt to put him in a round pen and video tape his hind end as he picks up the lope in both directions it is easy to see once you know what to look for and that is free! also if you run the horse at a 3 day show by the third day he might be sensitive on the stifle area to the touch but not necessarily will there be swelling |

Location: Durango CO | Stay straighter even longer than normal. If you are catching on the backside that is a clasdic sign thst you need to ride a bit deeper then come around.Practice trotting and lopping all the way to the fence then come around. Then get her hip past it and come around. 2 hands a little deeper also helps. |
