We have a horse that has a wide blaze that extends all the way down the face to the lips. The bottom half of her nose gets serverely sunburned this time of year. We have resorted to bringing her up from the pasture during the day and tieing under shade with water and hay. We apply ointment everyday to help the nose heal. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. How do you deal? Ive honestly thought about sun screen..but am hesitant.

My horses nose gets bad this time of the year, I put on 100 spf that's water proof and sweat proof. Works pretty good.

Are you sure it is sunburn???  I have 3 horses with white noses.  If they are out in the wet pasture for any extended periods they will get scratches (aka mud fever or greasy heal) on their noses.  The moisture makes the skin soft and then dirt, bacteria, fungus, bacteria gets in the pours.  It looks just like a really bad sunburn. I keep them stalled over night when the grass is full of dew.  Once the nose is healed, I put Keratex Mud Shield Powder on their noses when I turn them out in the morning if/when the grass is still wet.  Problem solved.

To get it healed, keep the nose dry, use Neosporin and then cover with diaper rash cream.

Yep children's sunscreen (min of SPF 45) waterproof sweatproof for the face and then I have a spray SPF 100 that I use on back of pasterns for the ones with socks.  Apply every day.

Check your pastures for alsike clover too, it can cause photosensitivity in horses, especially when grazed wet and on white areas. We thought we had regular sunburn so we started turning out at night and bringing them in during the day, due to the clover though they still were getting severe burns even with limited sun exposure.

Eradicated the clover and didn't have an issue anymore.

Yep, desitin  cleared ours up.  If it is sunburn you can buy fly masks that extend over the nose.

My vet told me it was the combination of sun & grass. Take one away & it won't happen. Of course, his explanation was WAY more technical but I can't remember all that. Desitin (or the Equate brand) is what he told us to use & it worked.

There is a sunscreen for horses called "my pony sunblock" that works great and stays on when they drink out of the tank.

This is what I do. My mare despises sunblock (desitin works too), and will dunk her head in the water and scrub it on her leg until she rubs it off.  The long nose mask works great.
