A friend of ours had a horse that had it in all 4 feet, bad. They ended up having to do surgery to cut the entire frog out of each foot. The horse was in hospital plates here at our house for a month or so being doctored everyday. They ended up putting a medicated powder on it but I'd have to ask the vet what it was. He told us that it can come back any time and about the only way to really get rid of it was to cut it out.

Try a quality tea tree oil. Dab a little on the spot. I haven't found much that isn't helped by this stuff. It's pretty amazing.

Miserable stuff. I had a filly with it and I would get it clear in one foot and then she would have it appear in another. It's very painful for them. This went on for months and felt like forever. Finally a farrier told me it is in their bloodstream so you have to treat the horse with antibiotics at the same time you are cleaning the feet daily and soaking them in a betadine solution. I put the filly on SMZ's twice a day for 8-10 days and cleaned and soaked the feet religiously every day. That worked.

Bringing this back up as I have one with it in all 4 hooves. Current treatment is cauterization to remove and elastikon wrap over a betadine soaked gauze. Sometimes hoof boots for turnout. Rood and Riddle just posted a video on the FB page. They apply metronidazole powder and acetone on gauze in some cases. In others tetracycline. We are one month in on her front feet being done and normal frog tissue is coming back. Had a touch up treament on them and did rear last week. I can't wait to get my mare back going again. BTW- this can come on QUICK! July 15th she was due for a trim
(had been out to pasture being an ornament since my pregnancy- I returned and with less time I was riding another horse solely
). I found a crevice in her frog I attributed to thrush and began an agressive soak of oxine and then no thrush powder. I continued the powder for 3 weeks. Then the drought came and everything was so dry, I decided to just leave her be and see how it handled itself for two weeks. Came back to it being worse and more aggressive soaks and wrapping with diaper filled in no thrush and diatomaceous earth. No progress so I scheduled an appointment with the local vet school. No way was I going to get this under control on my own.

Cankers take a long time to go away. I wouldn't be surprised if you were treating it for months. The most common way to treat it is to anesthetize and debride what we can, then we keep the foot bandage and do several cycles of cryotherapy. Then we put metronidazole powder mixed with benzoyl peroxide and acetone. It's a very long process because any amount of canker left behind will grow back.. so it is likely you will do several of these bouts of treatment.
