| Hello,
I am going to be getting a 16-17 month old filly some time in September, and as of now she has never had a vaccine. So, should she be given a 5-way vaccine and WNV vaccine once and then another of each in 4-6 weeks... or???
If it helps, I live in GA and she will be moving here from NM.
Thank you!! :) |

I would call a vet and get a professional opinion on this. For sure seperate her completely for a month or so for quarantine. Make sure she can't reach over to your other horses. |

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | Why haven't they vaccinated her? She needs to be vaccinated for tetanus, EEE & WEE before you ship her. If she gets injured she could get tetanus and that's 100% fatal. EEE is also fatal and that's in your area. I saw an alert that they are having some cases of it this summer. She will need 2 shots of those 3 things ASAP 2-3 weeks between the two doses. Then you can give her the rest of the shots she needs when you get her home. |

| I just bought a mare whose vaccinations were out of date and BHUSA and I were discussing the vaccinations. We both agreed not to vaccinate in this heat. I give 5 way plus WNV and also give rabies. I will order and give it when the weather cools off a little. I would give two vaccinations but would certainly check with a vet. A good worming is on order too.

 You get what you give

Location: Texas | Most vaccines take two weeks to really take effect, so if she's hauling within the next two weeks no point in vaccinating her and then putting her on a trailer and stressing her. That's asking for bad things to happen. In regards to laws however for crossing state lines, I have no idea if there's any for vaccinations.
The core vaccines are EWT + rabies. I vaccinate for VEWT Rabies WNV and Flu/Rhino being in SE Texas with mosquitoes and all that fun stuff. |

Location: Texas | To answer the original question, you should vaccinate and booster 4-6 weeks after for any horse >1YO who has not been vaccinated before. I would do the first one about 2 weeks before the horse leaves the seller's home at least. |

| Thank you all for the replies. She is supposed to get her first round of shots and dewormer before she leaves. I just wanted to be sure of what all she needed and then which of them needed to be repeated in 4- 6 weeks.
My horse (he's 10) gets EWT, Flu, Rhino & WNV every year.

Location: West Texas | You can give her any vaccine you want and yes it probably requires a second booster the first time. Tetanus and sleeping sickness are probably the most important, but we also do West Nile. We don't do any of the influenza or rabies. If those may be a problem in your area or facility, then you should consider.
We don't vaccinate any of our babies until at least that age or when they two. Heck they don't even get caught until about that age here, much less poked on. |

The Flu and Rhino need to be given at least twice a year, since the immunity from those vaccinations do not last a year, or at peak hauling times. That is when risk for catching them is at its highest. |
