| Any idea what kind of products they use to prevent breakage on the end of their manes? Like a moisturizing cream brand? My mare has a pretty mane but gets very thin on the ends. I try to only brush and wash it a couple times a month, but it still looks stringy. :/ Thanks!!! |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | When we worked down in TX, they didn't do much of anything other than wash with cheap Orvus Shampoo, brush gently and keep in braids. Those horses are always stalled and usually have slinkies on so they can't rub them at all. |

This. Stalls and slinkies.
I"ll add my 2 cents by saying they don't use rubber bands on their braids. I know some who use actual mini hair ties, and some who use a little electrical tape. But most of them agree that rubber bands break the hair. |

We trim our tails pretty regularly and it seems to help them grow as well as thicken up (mainly because the shorter hair has a chance to catch up). There seems to be a fine line between over brushing and not brushing them enough but I feel that if they aren't super tangled then they may not tear out/break off as much. We also try to keep them conditioned and tie them up when we ride. |

Orvus, comb with your FINGERS, no brushes and only wash the hair once a month IF THAT. Electrical tape on the ends of the braids, slinky with hood, stall.

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | There are so many variables that come into play! All my horses tails are fabulous, as far as manes. They are pretty dang good also, but with all the sheets, blankets, hoods, etc. that we use it obviously causes damage. I try to keep everything clean and tangle free, just like people hair. For tails I trim regularly. And of course genetics play a big factor. Considering only 2 horses in my barn are related, all 6 have fabulous tails

| My colt rubbed all of his long beautiful mane out :( he now looks like a donkey, sticking straight up!!!
Any ideas on how to get it to grow out faster? Its to short to braid.... I am about to order a mane saver but would love ideas on anything to put in the mane to help it grow faster! I bought some Biotin when I was at the feed store yesterday. |

| i use condition with silk proteins, i stick it on especially when they are gonna be out and the rain can wash i use the silkproteins conditioiner and then wash it out combing with my fingers and use the less you can to brush out and onlky do that sparingly. for the inter i do swirl the tail into a knot just below the tailbone then vet wrap and leave it a long time the wash and condition once a month. |

Location: Southern Michigan | My sunfrost bred mare has a nicer mane than most reiners/cow horses I've been around. All I do is occasionally trim the dead ends off, and occasionally use suave shampoo/ conditioner on the mane.
As far as the reined cow horses I've been around, I can't really remember them doing anything special. Orvus Shampoo works good for cleaning, cheap human shampoo & conditioner. It really is all genetics.
For tails I wash with baking soda and vinegar, then suave shampoo & conditioner. Then I put her tail up in figure 8 knots that I learned from the cow horses. Normally put 4-5 figure 8 knots, and wrap them in vet wrap. My barrel horse's tail drags the ground, and the knots help raise it up several inches. I've never had or seen any problems with the knots. I don't wash her tail very often, but when I do I make sure to cut several inches off for dead ends.
Sorry for such a large picture

| When I worked for a reining trainer we used lots and lots of Healthy Hair to help the mane and tail brush out easier. Then after they rode we used Ezall to wash and then another good coating of Healthy Hair. |

Location: Colorful Colorado | I have owned my mare Kline for many years. Her tail drags the ground. Her mane is horrid. I have used buckets of Mane and Tail on her mane only. It is still only a few inches long. She was getting all the additives and extra supplements we all give our horses and I didn't see any growth. |
