| For a thicker backed, no withered horse? My made is a little sore in her back right behind her withers. I will be purchasing a new pad, but I know most likely I will need a different saddle. In your experience what has fit your horses that are built like this? Also how do you measure the gullet size on your horse to know what size they need? Right now I have a full qh bars on my saddle. |

| My horse who is shaped like a whiskey barrel I had to custom order a crown c with flat bars, she is a 11" gullet. It is the only saddle that doesn't move or sore her up. |

| I have one from american saddlery. I switch to my older pad since my new one was causing my saddle to slip. I am going to purchase a new pad because I need something better but know I will most likely have to custom order a saddle. She never acts sore but had a massage this past week and found the spot. |

How do you measure or shape their back so the waddle company knows what they need? |

| If you have a shop with a good high quality selection within a few hours of you who can help you fit - a day spent going there and back will be for the better compared to all the buying and selling you'll do taking guesses at what will work.
Next best thing would be to send pictures to a variety of dealers/fitters and see what they say. |

| I bought a colt, 4 year old 1135 lbs. mutton withered. After about 8 different saddles, I found a marlene mcrae flex tree by cactus with an 8" gullet that fits him like a glove. |

 Go For It!
Location: Texas | Get a good 3/4" real wool felt pad, I actually use a 1"... I'm a Todd Sloan fan... it'll cost you about $225.00 but save you a bunch on a new saddle. Make sure that you aren't putting your saddle to far forward. You want those shoulders to move freely. If YOU are comfortable in that saddle then just keep it. You can always add shims if it isn't fitting your mare as well as you like. But a good wool felt pad will make a world of difference.
Good luck!

I had mine professionally fitted by Brian and Tracy.
But you can send Brian pictures and he can give his suggestion. Martin also had a demo program not sure if they still do but please try before you buy.
Crown c are not for everyone
The FX3 it seems more like them and they can come in the same gullets |

That's the first step I am going to take. Get a good pad and see from there. I'm a broke college student lol but definetly don't want her sore. I actually have a 100 dollar gift certificate from connie combs and was looking at her pads. She has some billy cook felt pads but I'm a little nervous about getting one since my last billy cook pad was causing my saddle to slip. |

| There's also a wealth of education on this board if you can take some pictures and post them, saddle with and without a pad from all angles.
I commend you for having your horses best interest in mind and being willing to find a new saddle. There are a lot of good brands that you can find used reasonably priced.
I really prefer to buy locally when I can so I can try and ride in a saddle before I hand over cash. I have seen 3 saddles side by side all supposedly the same tree, stamped right on the saddle (well known name brand and all of these saddles would have been $2000-$4000 brand new) and every single one of them was a different shape (I won't say the gullets wouldn't have all measured the same, but very different angles/flare/rock) and all fit the same horse very differently. We chalked it up to different years, anywhere from 6yrs-6mos old and possibly different tree models or makers.

Well of course. My horse is my baby and I want her to feel good. I don't have the money to lay down 1k plus for saddle right now so before I do I want to see if a good pad can help. She will also be getting massage regularly to try to help with it. I have a few gift certificates from a silent auction so hopefully that will help some. |
