I recently bought a 6yo AQHA gelding who isn't necessarily underweight, but he could definitely stand to build up his topline. When I first got him it was tough to get him to eat all his feed on Seminole Preform Safe, so I started mixing some Seminole DynaSport in with it and he seemed to really like it. I'm not sure if it was just him settling in, liking the flavor of DynaSport better, or even pelleted vs. textured, but he is on only DynaSport now. To build up his topline and maybe add a few pounds, should I feed total equine?? I've heard lots of good things about it.

I fed it several years ago with very mixed results. The 2 colts looked good on it, muscle definition was great, no extra flesh, very shiny and healthy looking. My gelding absolutely fell apart on it - I was feeding it to gain more top line. He lost all his top line and looked awful, I evn called the guy who came up with it. He couldn't help me either. Took me a couple of years to get his topline back.

We transitioned all of our horses over to Total Equine about a year and a half ago.  We have had excellent results.  From our pasture pet gelding, horses being worked, to pregnant mare.  Topline looks great, shiny coat, excellent review from our farrier on their hooves.  My pasture pet gelding has actually lost weight on it as he eats less hay.   Only issue we did have with it is one of my geldings had a hard time transitioning to the dog feed type texture of the feed.  Took a few months but he now eats great.  Strongly suggest Total Equine.   I found the website to be helpful in answering the questions I had on the feed.

It's worth a shot! We have all of our horses on it except for one (he's been on the same feed for most of his life and looks amazing for being 23.) It has worked wonders for us! It SAVED my breakaway/goat horse and has helped to "ease" a mare of ours as well. Total Equine is also helping to make my 24 year old pole horse feel even better (almost to good if that's possible!) Every one has filled in nicely and their coats and feet look great too :) Just as a little FYI though.... There is a biotin supplement in the feed (and a vitamin e/selenium) we always gave a biotin supplement with our other feed and didn't think anything of it when we switched to Total Equine... until their feet started growing crazy fast! So we are stopping the biotin supplement!

For the cost of the feed.....I would go with something different. I've seen it make good looking horses look worse, I wouldn't feed it myself.

I know there have been mixed reviews but I wanted to post a pic of my gelding that is now 3. He's been on that and nothing else since he started first eating grain. His grown, muscle and attitude have been great. HIs feet grow quickly, so we do trim him regularly but that's not a bad thing. I don't feed as much as they suggest any longer. I did in the beginning, but now he's on pasture and I cut his ration some. This is a pic I took this week and he just came back from his 2 months of training. I think he looks awfully good for leaving his home and working!

I tried it several years ago and had mixed results. 6 horses, 4 geldings and 2 mares. The geldings went to crap but the mares did fine. Took me forever to get their topline back.

For the price and the amount I was having to feed, I chose to not continue feeding it. I think it's a good product, I like what's in it, I like that it comes from a safe mill. But my horses and my checkbook are doing better on alfalfa cubes and rice bran.

I am interested in other people's results as well! I have tossed around switching to this because I have heard great things about it. I have a gelding that gets a little too chubby on Purina Ultiuim, but Purina Strategy is not enough for him. I am hoping Total Equine would be a good fit for him. People who do feed it, is it cost effective? I see the bags around here are $20 for 40lbs but the rep tells me you actually feed less than other bagged feeds. Thoughts and opinions?

It's $21 for 40lbs where we are and in a way you do kind of feed less... We never weighed our scoops but we gave the same amount as what we used to feed (scoop and a half, and the scoops feel lighter so I guess that's were you get more feedings) with no problems, if anything they gained weight. With a single bag of total equine I get about 2-3.5 more feedings than I would with a 50lbs bag of sweet feed.

Do the math for where you live.  TE recommended feeding is 4# and we pay $25 for 40#.  Strategy for example is $28 for 50# and recommended feeding is 9.75#   Feeding per recommendation is $2.50 a day for TE and Strategy is $5.46.  It makes sense for me to feed Total Equine where I live and every horse is different.  I don't feed the same feed to every horse, depending on what their individual needs are, or if they have insulin resistance or other factors that need to be taken into consideration.

I had a slighter built gelding that was laid up all last winter.  He had blossomed when I took off his blankets this spring from Total Equine.  That is my experience.  You will get a different opinion from just about anyone you ask.  Best way for me has always been to try something and see how it works for my horses' needs.
