I have a mare that hit her shoulder coming out of the barn back in July- called a vet to come out and look at her. She recommended stall rest for as long as possible and hosing it off 3-4 times a day. Well that lasted a week before this mare couldn't handle being coped up. Does perfect for weekend shows but can't stand it any longer than a week. Also set up some panels outside so she could get out of the barn but hated that too. Vet told me it could be anywhere from 4-12 months before it would heal. She is my favorite horse standing in the pasture and also the biggest pain. LOL Does anyone have any suggestions on anything that might help it heal faster? I have been putting liniment on it after I hose it off in the mornings because I am unable to hose it off during the day. Any advice would be appreciative. TIA

We had this happen to a pony (gelding). Long story short.... He ran into a tree. The way our vet described it made it sound like some heal from it others don't. The one our pony had he would not heal from (he had a stroke to add to the list as well.) It was his front right shoulder that this happened to. He learned to get around pretty good like that, he would just tuck that leg in and go! The vet did say though that if he was a mare and did not show signs of healing, then breeding the mare would fix the Sweeney shoulder, I just can't remember why though.

That is a little odd that breeding the mare would fix the problem lol I'll have to do some research on that. We are considering breeding her but didn't want the extra weight to delay healing. Some days she walks ok and others she limps pretty bad.

That's what I thought. I guess that's why it has stuck in my head for so long :)

I buy mine from Charlene Ornellas here in CA. her website is

www.cbarnquarterhorses.com The Biggest ingredient is CANABIS. Yes, the same you find in Marijuana BUT it is the part of the plant with no THC or what people use to get high from what I understand. We are talking instant and natural pain relief with no side effects. I spray it on my mares back when she has a hard heat and it really calms her. Charlene can answer all your questions on it.

My gelding sweeney shouldered himself running into a limb of a tree in the pasture. We cold hosed, left him turned out, and had massage done on him. His took about 8 weeks and at first he was a little short strided in circles to the right..it was his left shoulder that he injured. Vet had me go back to doing stretches with him and another 2 weeks of that he was pretty well good to go again.

Dealt with this on a gelding among other issues. It is nerve damage which is very, very slow to heal up. I had to find someone on my own and the vets were not helpful AT ALL about treating this. Found a gal that does physical therapy on horses (trained as physical therapist on people and able to combine with her horse knowledge). She had a light of some sort that she would use on it. Turns out he had other issues that the vets were also clueless about at the time and she had him for about 6-8 weeks. I went to see him after a few weeks and the difference in him was night and day! He did get back to competing. The shoulder muscles were atrophied slightly and it did change his stride just a little but he was not lame.

I would suggest to hunt down other sources of treatment - chiropractic, essential oils, whatever you think sounds like it will help. Don't just rely on the vets because sometimes they will pooh-pooh other methodologies that do have a place in giving you viable treatment options.

Good Luck.

My vet told me that it could take up to a year to heal. She is turned out and I put liniment on her when I bring her in to feed. I was cold hosing it a couple times a day but it was drying out her skin so bad. I have thought about getting someone out to give her a massage and rub her down but unsure of who is good around my area. I have been rubbing her shoulder some but don't really know what I'm doing so don't want to mess anything up worse.

During the Hurricanes in Florida, 10ish years ago, we had a mare end up with a stick in her neck.  It was a minor wound and we kind of ignored it.  Then it broke open, (2 weeks later) trip to the vet, who cleaned it out found a small stick, treated healed.

She has a very long mane and I can only guess thats why I may not have noticed what happened.  None of the horses were being ridden due to hurricanes and weather.  One day I was combing her mane and OH MY GOSH...HER SHOULDER IS GONE.  It was literally a large piece of muscle just gone...Vet trip!

The vet said that there was damage to the blood supply to that muscle and thats what they call a Sweenied Shoulder.  Because we were off, she had a few months more off.  Started riding her again and she was fine.  She had another unrelated injurry and was off a total of 10 or 12 months.

She came back running 2D and 1D.  She doesn't seem to have any pain, or problems related to it.  The muscle never came back but you really have to look to notice it.  However once you notice it, well anyway.

She runs both directions and sometimes she has a tendenancy to drop in at the second barrel when she runs to the right (it's her left shoulder) but you switch her up and I'll never know if that was her tendancy or if it's related to the shoulder but it's no more problem than any other horses.

We sold her this year and new rider has been running in the 2D in very tough Florida competition.  I think the horse and rider will be running 1D sooner than later but need more time and the young lady is getting married so riders have been sporatic.
