Anybody (especially you Southeastern girls) ever trace body clip a horse over the winter? My good mare looks like a yak once it gets below 70 and the wind blows hard. I'm thinking about clipping her but have never done it before. Any experiences?

We do some of ours. Just a trace, not a full body clip. Helps them cool out faster in the winter when we are galloping.

I was thinking about just doing like a bib - down the bottom of the neck, chest and where the girth goes. Do you ever blanket the ones you clip?

We did the older (19) guy last year. Went from his throat latch down his chest to under his belly. He get pretty whooly and we wanted to be able to work him without him sweating too much. It def helped him. I blanket regardless if clipped or not so yes he was blanketed. Im also in the northeast where it got pretty chilly last year.

We also hanker everything in the barn. Once it gets cooler here, say 40 they get a sheet, below 30 they get a mid weight winter blanket.

I have trace clipped before. I can tell ya one thing, you will get some funny looks at the barrel race that's for sure! lol

I like the trace clip because they aren't completely naked and it gives you come flexibility about where you can ride. I would do it again if I had one that got really fluffy in the winter and I was planning on running. Just make sure you do it before the solstice because it can harm the hair underneath that is growing in for spring.
