Say you just want to get your horse looked over to make sure he isnt sore or having any soundness problems. You havent really had symptoms you just want a "check up done". What all do you ask the vet to look at/do?

bare minimum- flex test, hoof test and chiro. Then I would go from there based off the horses reactions and the vets findings.

I just ask mine to make sure everything is in good working order haha! That I haven't had any problems but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

If I'm asking my regular vet to check one of mine, I tell them as much as I possibly can. If they have been "off" at all, any behavior chsnges, anything else I can think of.

If it's a pre-purchase exam, I tell them evrything I can think of as far as old injuries and everything on one I'm selling. If it's one I'm buying, I would tell them my concerns and have them look at whatever area I thought there might be a problem with.

The way I look at it, you have to work together with the vet. Unless you are just testing out a new vet and want to see what they can find, lol.

Flexion test is pretty basic, and watch them move. I myself may opt to do hock x-rays for my own peace and mind and/or baseline xray. Of course, if anythiing pops up on the flexion tests, then we go from there.

I also do chiro checks on a regular basis.

I trust my vet and know he is really honest. I'd ask him if he can do a check up and what test he would recommend.  Tell him you want to get a base line for numbers and make sure everything is still working good.

I ask for a lameness exam. I usually know what the horse's problem is before I go and just say fix it.

Check him for soreness.  My vet will put his hands on him from his ears to his tail looking for soreness, hoof testers,  watch him move in the hard round pen, then flex him.

I ALWAYS do xrays of Hocks and Front feet ANNUALLY even if no symptoms. THose are the 2 areas that generally have the most problems. Maybe the vet can see an area just starting and address it before it becomes a soundness Issue. Hope that helps!

I tell them I want a lameness exam done. Then I'll tell them I am having problems, or I'll tell them I'm just making sure everything is in working order. They will usually start with a hoof test, then move on to flex tests....from there I will pull xrays if necessary.

Same here. I usually have mine looked over in the spring.
