So my new mare is very much dominant on her left lead. When I ask her for her right lead, it sometimes takes her a couple tries to get it. I always break her back down when she picks up the wrong lead then ask her for her hip then try to bump her up into that right lead. She's only 3 so I'm not too worried right now as she will pick it up. But I was just wondering what are some other tips out there for her to get better at picking up that lead right away and for it be more natural for her.

Here is the most simple way of creating an instant lead change while developing a stiff horse to also work into doing smooth automatic flying lead changes on his fluid side and his stiff side.

I laughed until I was in tears when I was shown one of Clinton Anderson's training videos several years ago. As a kid his riding instructor was an English event trainer and she would use all kinds of horse part descriptions to explain some very simple riding cues which Clinton said he had no idea what she just said ... as he put his method's together he used simple words and movements to describe how to get a horse trained to do the same things his English instructor made difficult to do. ... you have to find the video .. it is hilarious ...

This is what I do that works for the lifetime of the horse ...

At first you do not care which is their natural lead ... you need to train the horse to do several things and build into doing your left and right leads and then work into flying changes ...

Here we go;
Forget all the rear feet and lowering or raising his back non-sense ... there is not enough time nor judges when you are teaching a horse to be consistent and instant from any gait to jump into the lead you cue for to be piddling around with his rear end.

You don't care what his natural lead is to teach him these moves ..., smooth side passes left and right directions; two tracking down the arena left and right directions; in both instances you want his rear feet to follow his front feet by tucking his nose the opposite way he is to move and open up your leg the direction he is to move while pressing his side with the other leg. Your cues will be exaggerated to begin with and more refined later. Work on these as 10-15 minute part of your daily ride until you and horse are confident and smooth.

What ever his natural lead ... just work with that side while training him to do the following....
If he is a natural left leaded horse ... we are going to teach him not to have sticky feet ..
This is one of the few times I will tell you to use your arena fence as a guard rail for the horse to remain in position. I do not like round pens to teach one riding cues.
You are going to become aggressive and wake up your horse ... start with trotting around your arena counter clockwise and as you round a corner with a straight away in front of you... tilt his nose to the fence slightly to open the door for him to use his left front leg to jump into his left lead when you simultaneously spur, shout and whack him with a bat .. lol ... you want him to react quickly so his rear feet will follow his front feet .... no lollygagging around ... maintain that lead for an entire arena circle to teach him to maintain his lead .... .... trot half the arena and do it again ... Once he learns to smoothly jump into the left lead even tho that is his natural lead ... start using only your right leg for spurring or pressure and open up your left leg which completes the open door for his left front leg as you continue to use the nose tilted to the right ... finesse' will come as training continues ...

You now have him woke up and recognizing some cues .... now teach him to jump into this left lead from a standing still position .... using the same techniques in the same order as above ... scream if you need to ... lol

Once he is a smooth operator on his natural left side and recognizes the cues you have been doing ..... change directions and start to work on the right stiff lead side .... with no constant nagging ... just stop .. back up a few steps ... sit relaxed for a few moments and start your trotting again .... to do the right side tilt horses nose to the left and use left leg to spur/pressure with .... when he gets into his right lead the first times he is going to be unsure of himself so keep him moving and even go two turns of the arena and then stop and have a rest stop ..... and then take off and do it again ... 10-15 minutes on doing the same thing ... he will be better tomorrow so don't get crazy and get in a fight ... lol

On a daily workout .. you will keep doing your side pass, two tracking routines, your right and left lead training and your left or right lead from a standing start .. this and other things will end up as a training session you use to keep him legged up his entire life.

As you already know when training a young horse they will anticipate stopping or doing things in a certain spot in the arena where they have just got thru doing the same exercise ....... this is OK ... actually I would recommend it ... so give your cue as if it was your idea .. even when he is in the process of stopping ... ... the young horse learns how to setup his own feet to make a nice stop ...

Here is one thing I think every horse should be taught .. how to pretend I am a calf roping or goat tying horse .... it may save your life some day .... start teaching him at a walk, then trot, then lope ..... stand up in your left stirrup and even raise your right knee in the air as if you are going to dismount while stopping your horse at the same time.... and talk to your horse ... say whoa!!! in a low voice .. they can hear a 100 times better than humans ... lol .. and go ahead and dismount once he has stopped. Do this on the left and right sides until he starts anticipating and stopping on his own ... this is what you want him to do.... There may be a day you have a tack problem or a loud noise etc etc where this anticipated stop will be put to use if you get loose in the saddle ...

Let me know when you are ready to start teaching her to do flying lead changes ... there is also a simple trick to teaching one to do this ...

GOOD LUCK ... KEEP SMILING

BHUSA and I agree on how to pick up a lead so no point in repeating what he said.

Move the shoulder to the left then move the hip to the right is how i would do it, get that horse really broke to move her hip this is also a good way to get a flying lead change, I try to keep them standing up and collected, move the shoulder to the left then ask for the lead by moving that hip, if you trail ride practice it while at a walk a trot and get them side passing straight it will all fall in place. Keep us posted on your progress.

There should be something on YouTube.

Just for fun .. I went to youtube to check it out ...

I found a lot of English riders on schooling horses and a lot of talkers and no action .. lol

I enjoyed this one very much ...
Rider has no clue her horse is cross firing and throwing her butt high
in the air .... https://youtu.be/VsJCZmfiCCc

and here is my favorite talker that never gets to the point ..
How many of you have an over subdued droopy little horse like this
that you will be running barrels on ??
How did you like all of these flying lead changes?? lol
First thing I would do is worm this horse and start feeding him.
https://youtu.be/xXShMFdUlPY

Now for the only at speed lead changes using the hands ...
since their legs and butts are sticking up in the air ...
the lead change I want you to concentrate on is the one turning for
home after the far turn ... watch jockey's left hands make a very
quick nose tilt to the left to move the horses into a right lead ..
(this gives horse a fresh side with more energy to run to the finish line)

KENTUCKY DERBY ... AMERICAN PHAROAH
Jockey moves him from the outside with his batt on the his right side ..
now watch closely ... two strides after batt stops ...
his left hand jerks nose to the left to change to a right lead ..
the other two lead horses never changed leads and ran out of air ..

PREAKNESS .... AMERICAN PHAROAH
again .. you have to have quick eyes and back it up to see it clearly ..
Pharoah is in the lead and jockey switches to his right lead
the very instant he turns for home while bent to the left ...
same swift left hand move to pick up the right lead to run home ..

BELMONT ... AMERICAN PHAROAH ..
This a great video for you to see the 4 leads used in a horse race
left lead first turn; right lead on backstretch, left lead on far turn ..
PAY ATTENTION ... no lead change on Pharoah since he was leading
and giving his all and jockey made a smart decision not to change
to the right lead and throw Pharoah off stride ....

ALL THREE RACES ARE ON THIS LINK ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNbtOEHaNZg

AMERICAN PHAROAH was gifted to be able to maintain a 24 second per 1/4
mile in each of his races with a smart jockey who never pushed him as
long as he was in or near the front...
You can click on this link to find his racing charts .. you will notice the Run Up: times in each race (clock starts at this point out of the gates) of 34; 50; 80 feet...
so the first quarter always appears as the fastest ...
PAHAROAH WON $8.6 MILLION ..

Something that I have found that helps improve one sided-ness is to do a lot of transitions on the weak side in the round pen & on the lungeline. Just like anything else, if they get good at it on the ground, they'll be that much better under saddle. Another thing I've found helps a little is to two track or side pass pass moving forward in the opposite direction a stride or two,and then ask for that new lead. It's almost like you release them into it it's so easy.
