| How many of you use back boots on your horse's legs when you run? pros? cons? Is it better to wrap them? |

| I think this depends on your horse. I know a girl who swears up and down that her horse won't fire as hard with back boots on. Mine however, seem to like having hind boots on and will work harder with them. I run everything in a full set of boots.
My one personal preference is that I won't warm up in boots. Maybe it's just the cow horse foundation I have that got me in the habbit of booting up right before a run. |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | My mare hates hind boots. In saying that, she also tends to knock her left rear and is constantly nursing cuts. Not farrier fault, it's been this way with 4 different farriers, also slightly cow hocked.
I always warm up and do dry work with hinds on. But remove them for her run, since she doesn't absolutely love them. |

| depended on the horse mr kass man would sit so hard he burn his ankle we put pads and back on him so he would not hurt
but i took all boots off as soon as at trailer as so much heat in them brush the legs off bruch the boot off so inside is clean
major peeve horse with boot on especially back boots sitting at trailer for hours |

| Mine hates back boots and doesn't run as hard in them but I am going to try polos just to see how she'll work :) She doesn't ever hit herself though so she doesn't really need them |

Location: North Dakota | My mare never liked back boots when I used CE and PC but since I've switched to Iconoclast when working at home and flowboots when we run she hasn't cared at all about her back boots. |

| I use iconoclasts on all four. I've had a gelding burn a hole through his rear polos which immediately made me realize how badly they need hind end support! I won't polo wrap because of a hole being able to be burnt through them as well as if they came untied and got tangled, you're screwed. |

| I only have two that I run and it all depends on the horse. My mare doesn't have a problem with back boots but I feel like she doesn't fire like normal when I put them on her. But I will put them on her if the ground is really crappy. My gelding on the other hand will not run nearly as hard if he just has just fronts on. On nice ground I will put polos on the back but really choppy I always go to boots. I guess iI just have it stuck in my head that boots provide a lot more support than polos but that's just what I have always done. I have also noticed that if i run him with out back boots or polos he always acts like he has twisted one of his back ankles. Could just be a cowinkidink though. I believe it is just what works best for each horse but always keeping in the back of your mind it could help prevent an injury. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I hunted and searched forever for x-lrg hind Ed Wright boots for my mare, got them and she absolutely hated them, LOL!!! Will not fire/run in them, lopes along in a WP lope and that's it. So for her I have to use Polo's because I haven't found SMB type boots that are big enough for her. My gelding runs in the Ed hinds, he gets in the ground pretty deep and burns his heels pretty badly without them. My little mare runs in SMB hinds, she is much more of an upright runner in the turns. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I run with Bar F Boots on the front (They're older than dirt to most people and are an ugly green but they're the BEST boots ever) and I wrap his hind legs with cotton track bandages to protect them from scratches while he gets low. He hates back boots.
I practice without boots and wrap all 4 in cotton track bandages. |

| I run in back boots, but dont slow work or use them during the week. Iv only owned 1 horse that hated back boots. But I have one horse that will burn his back ankles without them. The other horses I just try to protect them best I can. A lot can happen when ur running fast. I have used polo wraps a lot but you have to wrap them very carefully or they can pull down on the pasture and leave exactly the spot u r trying to protect bare. So make sure you wrap the ankle twice. |

All the horses I have currently hate back boots and won't run in them. I had one mare that turned so hard and got so low she would burn her back fetlocks. I tried boots and polos and she would tear them up in a few runs. I finally put the thick leather roping rear skid boots on her and it worked great! I personally think if they will tolerate them, use them BC more protection is always good. I'm big on warming up in just bell boots and putting smb boots on before run and taking them off right after I run. |

I now own this particular mare, and yes I have polos now that have holes in them. She does well on regular back boots for the most part. She just goes through them a little faster than the other horses would haha. To the OP, I use either back boots or polos on every horse I run. Have been doing so for 7 or 8 years now. I don't swap around horses much but I've never had one reject having them on. It's actually a bit of a pet peeve of mine to see horses run without full leg protection...but I understand some horses are finicky. For example, I know of an exceptionally nice 1D horse that won't run worth a flip with bell boots on.

Location: Southern Michigan | My first horse when I was 10 years old tore her back ligament almost in half. That was 8 long months of stall rest, driving to the boarding facility and hand walking every day, and cold hosing it for 15 minutes, and wrapping with poultice. I was just lunging her when it happened. Now that I'm older and started paying the vet bills, my horses always get some kind of boots at all time while being worked. My current mare is a diva and hated bulky boots. I still have some ventec elites she's ok with that I will use in certain hard runs. But we have found a mutual agreement on polos. She can be such a monster at times even just lunging, that polos are better than nothing. After many many rides, She has gotten used to them, and I don't mind the easy cleaning that come she with them. Plus they're cheap! |
