Location: U.S. | I just picked up a 3 yr (qh) gelding off the track. He is thin. The trainer who has him said he could not keep weight on him he was feeding him about 10 lbs of tribute performce sweet feed. All his other horses look great (so he was being taken care of). He has all the classic ulcer symptoms. You can see the way he carries him self they are bad. So my question is what would you do? (Feeding wise) I am thinking of putting him on tribute essential k and alfalfa pellets and smart balance oil and psyllium(for 7 days, once a month). I am. Also thinking of doing 30 days on omeprizol. What do you guys think of that plan? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Feeding I would take him off grain and get him on really good hay free choice. If you have pasture turn out that would be ideal as well.
For the ulcers, I would do GastroPLUS. I'll show you pictures of how they can fix one right up. The 10# of sweet feed would have just compounded the ulcer issue like nothing else can. I'll use Gastroplus over omaprazole any day. I have used both and see faster results with gastro as well as the fact you can leave them on Gastro long term if need be. They did just come out with a GI ulcer prevent that is cheaper than long term Gastro for horses that don't haul well etc. $110 shipped for 30 days, not many other options that are proven to work cheaper than that. | I would check the teeth, add alfalfa hay,cubes or pellets to help him digest his food,slow feeding hay bag, gastro guard if it's in the budget or gut proof by horsepower herbs, my horse had grade four ulcers on the verge of bleeding this is what i did i switched to renewgold or triple cleaned oats mine has pEms so oats are not a good choice for him,I also feed at the same time every day,good luck |

You can by safeguard from valley vet without a prescription, per my vet can't same ingredients. He had me give my horse 1/2 a tube daily for 3 weeks. I had one with respected colic episodes and another with ulcers, grain does not cause the ulcers but it sure aggregates them. My horse was refusing grain but wanted his forage. I feed renew gold and alfalfa, turn out and a few supplements. Horses don't need big buckets of grain to get their nutrition. |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | I would treat for ulcers and get him out of a stall and into a big turnout lot or even better in a pasture with 24/7 access to good grass hay. Other than that I would go with whatever good feed and/or alfalfa is available to you. |

| I would do 30 days of Equi-sure instead of Omeprozol
way better for the horses over all health - will help heal ulcers, maintain overall good digestion and help with weight gain AND the best part it very cost effective compared to Omeprozol.
And it will help Hind gut ulcers as well!!

Safeguard is the dewormer, I think you mean UlcerGuard although a round deworming might be in order too. I feed the same as you and saw great results with the Renew Gold and alfalfa pellets on my hard keeper. I also treated for ulcers but with the compounded omeprazole from Teri Crooks and really liked it. I would suggest giving some probiotic paste too.
1DSoon is right though, have the vet check him out and go from there. |

| I would scope him before i invested in ulcer medicine, it sounds like that is what it is. Make sure you go to a vet who specializes in performance horse the local cat dog chicken and hog vet is a waste of time and money, usually around racetracks you'll find good vets. |
