Β Being a mare certainly does help, but I do tell my horses that they can be anything they set their mind to...

Location: Bandera, TX | The recipient mare needs to be on the same cycle as the embryo donor mare, so there need to be some mares on stand-by.... I guess... How does the repro vet have access to a recipient mare?
Does everyone bring their own recipient mare? I don't know how this works. I don't breed, but have a couple of mares that have working uteruses and not much else. |

Ha! I have one gelding who lives with three mares.... he is almost there, but it took a while. He would make a great mommy, probably better than all the mares. |

| Most places want mares between the ages of 4-10 for recep mares. They pay kill prices for them. They want big, healthy, gentle mares. |

this
except for the Kill prices.
In our part of the world they are being bought for $700-1000 if they fit the criteria.

Location: Texas | Some repro facilities have a recip herd of mares that they check their cycles daily and match with donor mares, and will do the ET onsite.
Many vet clinics will do the AI and embryo flushing and then ship the embryo to a facility that has a herd for the ET part.
Rarely do you provide your own one mare as a recipient. Although it can and does work, it's harder to get them synced up appropriately with just one mare available. A friend of mine did it that way with no problem last year so, go figure. |

Location: Texas! | I worked for a cutting ranch that did all ET and we got some great recipes and then some bat sh!t crazy ones. Some came skin and bone wondered how they were even bred and couldn't trim their feet without getting your head kicked in, half crippled and this was carrying some high dollar bloodlines. |

This. We have our own herd of recip mares. They are ultrasounded at least 3X a week throughout breeding season along with our donor mares that we are flushing embryos from. Our recip mares are typical stock breeds. Quarter Horses, Apps, Paints, ect. We prefer not to have draft type mares for recip mares. We do all of our own ET work here at our ranch on our own mares that we are actually running. We have also had embryos flown in from other farms, to be put into recip mares that we have here at our ranch that were timed right for that donor, however we do not generally do any repro work for the public. |

Gentle is optional, lol. The last one we had was not, had to rope her in anything smaller than a 12x12 stall. |
