Just curious. I know years back when I asked the popular answer was just COB. I know just a good balanced diet is most important, but wanted to ask what everyone feeds their weanlings these days.

I'm feeding oats, flax seed, free choice loose minerals, salt and free choice grass hay.  Supplement with alfalfa hay.  I like keeping things natural.

Love the feed back complete with pictures!! My filly was on Safechoice mare & foal along with alfalfa pellets, beet pulp and Farnam Grow Colt, but after the Safechoice scare I pulled it. Seems to be on the East Coast more, but rather be safe than costly.

Mine were on LMF but I am making my own mix now. It is a little odd but here it is an it seems to be working really well. My orphan filly is just as big as a filly born the same day. I don't have good pictures of her on this computer though. We are also using it on a rescue mare who foaled in Sept and was a good 200 lbs underweight probably more. She has been gaining steadily and her baby is growing well too.

I use a mix of oats, alfalfa pellets, peas and pumpkin seeds . I also add horsetech hi point grass supplement, oil (usually a flax, coconut, fish oil mix) but sometimes rice, and an herbal mix , I use muscle mass on the ones running and make up my own for the others to save a little. I also use curost on some. They love it even if it is a weird mix.
They all get mix hay as well.

With my soy allergic horses and all of the issues with the monensin poisoning I pulled all of the processed feeds and scrutinize everything that I feed them now. And of course this what your Princess got during her short visit at my house

-Alfalfa 2x a day
-Free choice teff grass.

At night they get:
-Alfalfa/timothy pellets
-Shredded beet pulp (no molasses)
-Max E glow race bran (it’s the only stabilized rice brand I could find that was soy free other than Renew Gold and my horses didn’t seem to like RG)
-Adeptus Augment vitamin (again very hard to find one that is soy free) and I add a little 100% rice bran oil to mix it all together.

I am also a huge fan of SeaBuck and need to start incorporating that back in the mix. My horses were always shiney even with a coat and no ulcer issues.

I also have a horse who is very sensitive to soy so I have eliminated it from my feed now and make my own.

That's pretty much what I had to do. It takes a while to mix everything up for 8 head currently, but at least I have control of how much they are getting and can tweak it as neccessary. I did find one company that mixes up almost exactly what I am, but there's only 2 places in So Cal that carry it and it's not worth the 2 hour drive, so I will continue to mix it myself. It's amazing the changes my horses have went through since I went soy free.

For you so Cal gals ( 3C and Old Grey Mare), Integrity ( Star Milling) makes an awesome stabilized rice bran product here locally. Almost all the feedstores carry it and they have a safe mill right there in Perris.

It wont work for me as it has soy in it. Integrity is what I had used in the past and I did like it. But it's too hard to buy 2 different products and split it up between the soy allergic and non soy allergic....so Max E Glow it is!

I keep it easy. They come off of pasture so I put them on our home raised grass hay-free choice. Ultium Growth and THE Muscle Mass. They look super and we have never had OCD issues in 16 yrs of raising horses.

Mine sure gained a bunch in just a short time on my mix and the muscle mass. I was going to ask you about feeding it to babies.

I only do 1/2 a scoop. A full scoop is for a 1000 lb horse.
