| I bought a 4 year old gelding by Special Crown Royal out of a Thoroughbred mare about 3 months ago. He was in poor condition when I purchased him and in the time that I have had him he has developed a soft glossy coat, good hair and hoof growth but...I CANNOT GET HIM TO GAIN WEIGHT! I need some insight/advice!!! A few things about him: he is a busy body, constantly on the move, gets very distracted at meal time. He is slightly parrot mouthed, teeth have been floated. He does drop food but he eats out of a 40 gal tub on top of a rubber mat so he gets most of what he is fed plus he is supervised during meal time to ensure he gets all of his food. He has been vetted and dewormed. Currently on DAC cool gut for possible ulcers, although he shows no other signs besides being thin. I would probably give him a body score of about a 3...
Forgage:
2 ac pasture, not great quality, 24/7 with only my 6 year old gelding
Round bale good quality mixed grass hay 24/7
Big flake alfalfa at night
Feed routine, divided into two meals, morning and night:
6 lbs alfalfa pellets, soaked
2 lbs nice fat whole oats
2 lbs stabilized rice bran
1 cup whole flaxseed
1 cup soybean oil (not my first choice but Im desperate)
Just recently started him on OE Align 1 week ago, im hoping that will do the trick
Free choice redmond salt
Am I just being impatient? Anyone have any other suggestions? FYI my other three horses are on this diet, minus rice bran and soybean oil and only 3 lbs alfalfa pellets and they are all fat as a tick and look fantastic!

Location: Cap'n Joan Rotgut.....alberta | Why not try 30 days of ompromazole. ....and this is jmo and everybody has one. .but i think a basic whole oats ..whole flax and beet pulp are the best way to go..especially with free choice hay...i think to much is just an overload on their systems....m |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | As long as he's eating good, I would say give it more time. You're basically feeding what I would. My go to's on feed for weight & condition are good alfalfa, rice bran. I've got an OTTB that was poor when I got him and that's exactly what made him blossom. Took him at least 3-4 months before I saw a big difference. |

Location: Deep South | DAC Cool Gut is for ulcer prevention/maintenance I think you need an ulcer treatment.
3 months on that diet and you should have seen a notable difference in weight gain by now, even if not where you want him to be quite yet. |

| I would treat with equi sure or comfort gut to get the gut working properly.
Then I would take out the rice bran as that is a lot of fat to be giving a horse |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I second Equisure. My mare with kidney stones started having some issues keeping weight on, thought that maybe her kidney's were done. Blood panel showed that her Bun and Creatatine was still with in the Normal range however but no matter what or how much we fed she didn't seem to put any weight on. Then I tried the equisure and at first I thought there was no way it could do what it says it does because you dont' really give very much. She packed on about 75 lbs in a little less than a month just with that change alone. Well worth every penny.  |

I have to agree with you. I have to know the nutritional break down of what I am feeding. Mine get a balanced ration feed (14%) and a small amount of Cocosoya only because they like it and coastal hay. I keep GROSTRONG loose minerals out free choice. I keep it simple. |

so basically 3 lbs pellets and 1 lb oats 2 times a day plus added extra stuff of flaxseed and rice bran..
he gets a flake of alfalfa at night but unlimited grass hay which is a great filler..
in my opinion some busy horses need more substance.. to me that isnt enough .. there are the extra stuff which works for normal horses but Id up his alfalfa hay and id try maybe a good healthy grain 12-10 once he gains try the other but for now thats my opinion and some more time..

| I recently took my gelding to vet bc he was too thin. He WAS on renew gold(nothing against it, just didn't do the job for my horses) and alfalfa morning and night plus pasture and coastal as needed. Teeth, check. No ulcers, No EPM. Fecal sample "normal" All blood work came back well within normal range. He's truly a hard keeper, probably bc hes so busy LOL. Per vet we Power Pac bc he said it will really clean out residual worms missed by my worming program and it will help boost the immune system. He explained long before vets used panacur for worms they used it as immune booster. I also switched him back to Purina Enrich and Rice Bran. 2 flakes alfalfa and 1coastal as pasture is dead right now. It takes about 60 days to see real results. My horses looks phenomenal now and it's been about 90 days |

| Thank you everyone for the suggestions so far! I switched him from alfalfa pellets to alfalfa cubes and I am keeping everything else the same....I don't know if its because its adding more long stem fiber to his diet or what but believe it or not I truly feel that I am seeing results already. The rep I talked to from OE Nutraceuticals said it could take 4-6 weeks of the Align and since I have seen what it can do for other horses then I am going to stick with that. |
