Location: Montana | Does that usually mean its too wide or too narrow? I can't remember! LOL. Its such a simple thing to forget, too, but I haven't dealt with a rolling saddle in close to 8 or 9 years, and I had it happen today on my 2 y/o that just came back from the trainer. Thanks!
ETA: So, my saddle is rolling on this horse and it bothers me. I've been searching for a saddle, and inquired on a saddle that belongs to a person who knows a lot about saddle fit, and they told me something completely different than I was expecting. Anyone on here want to help me with saddle fit? I have some side pictures of my horse I can post or send to someone. But I don't want to spin my wheels by buying a different saddle every 2 weeks, so I'm trying to get something that will work for me for a while with this 2 year old until she grows up a little more.

Well this 2 y/o does have wide shoulders. I have been riding her in my good saddle (it fits my other horse well) which is a Courts with FQHB and a 7 inch gullet, and it has fit every other horse I have put it on, except for the rolling on her. I couldn't remember what rolling meant...I thought it meant the saddle was too narrow, but there are so many different variables. Maybe I need more flare with semi-qh bars? So confusing...and I don't want to buy a 2 y/o a "good" saddle yet (i.e. one that fits her just right and made for her) because I know her back is going to change. |

Location: The Great Northwest | I have had saddles roll either too small or big! When they don't quite fit, it doesn't fit! On a two year old most of the time the withers are not up, so usually take a wider saddle or possibly flatter bars. When you have young horses, you really need to have an assortment of saddle sizes. |

And I've had them slide back when they're too wide, and roll when they're too narrow. It depends on how the horse and saddle fit together, there's no hard and fast rule. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I had a saddle that was to wide and it slid back no matter what pad I had under it, to narrow would roll. I agree with Three 4 Luck just depends on how your horse is built and type of saddle, but the bars do make a big differents in saddle fit..For a saddle to wide I would go with a tad bit of thicker pad and a narrow saddle go with less pad so there wont be to much pressure untill you can get the right fit..

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I agree with what someone else said. Try a flatter bar. My mare doesn't have whithers but is very very wide. I had her fitted and her saddle has a 10in gullet with alot flatter bars than my other saddles. If you don't want to get her a good saddle since she's 2 try a thinner pad. I tried tons and tons of pads before getting a new saddle and the best was a 1/2in impact gel. |

No, the trainer didn't have issues, and I talked with him about it. But he has a very special made, very expensive saddle he uses, and he says it fits almost every horse he puts it on, and it fit her well too.
She does have some withers, not a lot, but I definitely wouldn't call her mutton withered. She does have wide shoulders. I don't mind buying her a saddle, I just don't want to spend thousands on one until she is done growing. Other than rolling (and that's enough) the saddle seems to fit okay...it doesn't slide forward or back, it just rolls. |

Location: sunny california | i gave up and just invested in a hand full of caldwell saddles. I managed to find a TG and a rocket. for the running breds. I got a track horse that was a little narrow and had been on pasture so the TG fit great but I could tell when he gained weight i would need it to be wider so found a rocket. Worked out perfect. i had a pro racer from a horse a while back and picked up a promax. I figure I can fit just about anything now. If they need wider I probably wouldn't ride them as I don't ride really big horses |
