I have a job opportunity in Charlotte, NC but I've never ever been in the state! Are there any rural areas within commuting distance of downtown? Are there many barrel races and other horse activities? What else can you tell me about the area?

There are tons of rural areas within an hour commute
(depending on traffic
)- pretty much any direction. I would say more of the jackpot/NBHA type barrel races are to areas west of the city- Stanley, Cherryville, Kings Mountain, and those areas are a little more affordable as well. Like most places, the further from the city, typically the less expensive. Straight north is the Lake Norman area, which is pricey and pretty well developed, so you have to go a little farther to get into really rural areas that direction, but there are nice rural areas all around. A lot of people even commute to the city from SC.
I could find a barrel race to attend pretty much every week except maybe December & January, and there are still some things going then. Lots of weeknight jackpots in the summer months for tuning. Also lots of big shows within a few hours drive - Clemson, Fletcher, North Augusta are all short drives and have several big shows
(No Bull, NBHA
).
There are several nice parks to trail ride in- Latta, South Mountain, Dupont, Moses Cone.
There are also lots of activities for other types of riding, but I don't do those so I couldn't really fill you in- I just know I see posts and flyers for clinics & shows pretty regularly.
