Looking at taking our exchange student on a Spring break trip.. she LOVES history, reading and wants to be a lawyer someday... what location (or another suggestion) would be best for a March trip?

I've been to CA before but still a lot left to do in the LA and San Diego/Carslbad area. I've only been on the Coast on Florida though and always wanted to see the Everglades so not sure which would be best? Anyone who has been there suggestions?

If you want real history, take her to Boston, or Philidelphia, or somewhere out east where all of the historical sites are located.

Or to Mount Rushmore or Yellowstone.  Those places have as much interest and a whole lot more beauty than LA!! The Everglades, maybe, but seems sort of tame.  Can't say the mountains would be a great guarantee in March, but you never know.

We just went to LA to watch California Chrome run at Los Alamitos and on our way home stopped at the California Science Center to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor. It was very cool! In LA there is also the Queen Mary with a WWII tour, the USS Iowa which has a great tour and there is a Holocaust museum. What kind of history does she like? There is also the USS Midway in San Diego.

Depends what kind of history she's into, nothing in California is THAT old. We do have the missions and stuff like that, which none of us here have any interest in after learning about them in the 4th grade. LOL

Well, she likes history in general but her favorites are WWI and LOVES Greek History!!

We want to go somewhere relatively WARM so the North and Eastern parts are out and her parents are going to take her to NYC and some other places in the East when they come in June. :)

World War I history is going to be tough to find anywhere in the US due to our limited involvement. If you do decide to go to LA I can't recommend staying on the Queen Mary enough. It has so much history on it from the famous people who traveled on it to being a troop transport during WWII. They have a free audio tour and then guided tours. You can also walk all around it and if something isn't blocked off or locked you can go there. It was a sister ship to the Luisitania so there is a little WWI connection lol. The rooms are really cool with a lot of the old features still there. It's in Long Beach right across the harbor from the aquarium and some good restaurants (the Yard House is our favorite). You could easily spend a day at the science center which is only about 1/2 hour away and it was really cheap. $12 to park then $2 a person to see the shuttle and there were a ton of other science-y displays. We only intended on seeing the shuttle that day and were sad we didn't have more time to spend.

How about St. Augustine, then the everglades.  St. Augustine is the oldest European settlement in North America.  They have the origional fort and the old town with recreaters.  Great resturants and they have an ampitheater with an  Easter historic recreation by the sea.

I would do LA over FL any day.  The Queen Mary and USS Iowa are very close in distance and both well worth seeing.  The Aquarium of the Pacific is right by the Queen Mary as well as many whale watching tours. The USS Midway in SanDiego is great to see too!  The weather for Spring Break season isn't always cooperatie at places like Philadelphia and Boston!

I was actually thinking the same thing! I thought it was fairly close but wasn't sure! :) that's a great idea too! Oh I wish we could go to both! I've ALWAYS wanted to see St. Augustine!

They are not close...about a 5 to 6 hour drive. But St. Augustine is very very nice though and you could easily do both if you don't mind some driving. Everglades is awesome for nature lovers. History lovers probably will not find it the most fascinating but should still be enjoyable. I literally lived next to the Everglades...there's tons of wildlife and it is a neat experience.
Things to do in the glades...take an Airboat tour, check out the Big Cypress Seminole reservation, go down to Everglades City and check out the town..Chokoloskee is also cool. There's a Florida Panther wildlife center just east of Naples. Kayaking in various places. Also extremely close to Miami (Under two hours from I-95 on the east coast to I-75 on the west coast..and I've done in just over an hour if you drive fast lol). Miami actually has a fair amount of history and would probably be very enjoyable. There's the Art Deco district with some really cool buildings..think Ocean Drive. Also check out Bicentennial Park.
And as an added bonus, if you are in Miami it's close to the upper Keys, and about 3 or 4 hours to Key West.

Ironically I'm going to CA for our summer vaca though lol!
