What would you do if you thought an abcess was starting?

Soak the foot in an ankle deep bath of epsom salts.

Ok, that would pull it out.

Is there anyway to zap
         it before it gets bad?

Feed through antibiotics would be my best bet. But as far as I know, they need to drain or will just get worse.

No.  Because the hoof wall contains it, you have to draw it out one way or the other. If it is allowed to sit, then it can get bad, if it's a deep one.  Otherwise, draw it out and be done.

pack sole with a clay poltice such as Numotizine and add epsom salts and if you have it a little Iodine 7%, wrap it in a diaper . Soaking in my opinion just makes the sole softer and more prone to bruising.

I second no antibiotics. I soak the foot in hot water and Epsom salt daily, sometimes twice a day if i have something coming up, and need to get it gone fast. I will then put ichthammol on any area I suspect that will break open.. if I am unsure I will put it on the entire cornary band, and the bottom of the foot. Then pack with sole packing. I use Sole pack from hawthorne products.. and wrap the foot with vet wrap. I leave it on overnight and into the next day when im ready to soak again.. repeat until it breaks. Good luck!

1 cup epsom salt, 1 cup oxy clean. Soak 30 minutes in the hotest water the horse can stand. Do it 2 days in a row.
Not suppose to get the mixture on the hairline, but I do & nothing bad has happened. The mixture will bubble all over & turn into a paste. Makes a real mess but it works.

First and foremost it is always best to try and establish drainage. If you are not experienced with digging abscesses out your next best bet would be to soak the foot daily in an epsom salt/betadine solution (use warm water), and then maintain the foot in a foot bandage with some sort of drawing agent- I like to use sugardine (a mixture of sugar and betadine solution).

I would not use systemic antibiotics on an uncomplicated foot abscess.

Soaking is a waste of time. Antibiotics don't work and can actually prolong the life of the abscess. Digging out helps relieve the pressure, but it can lead to a false sole and if that happens you have a real mess. I wrap with this recipe. Change every 24 hours. Longest I've seen it take to work is 48 hours. If after 48 hours you still have a problem, you probably don't have an abscess. Magic cushion works ok. Not as good as the mix I posted, but it does a decent job.

1 cup mud poultice (like Ice Tight)
1/2 cup Iccathamol
2TBS Epsom salt
1 tsp alum

You don't need the alum. It just makes it work a little better. It's a pickling spice.
