| i have three very seniors (34, 31, 28). Truthfully, I don't have to do much of anything for them. Even the 34 year old has all his teeth as do the other two. Plenty of grass hay, with some alfalfa when it's super cold and Pro Force High Fat 2x/day for the 34 year old...he's more of a hard keeper. During the Winter months, I bring them in at night and they have a really good bed of shavings. During the day, they have access to go out or be in the barn...I have about 3 acres and a dry lot they can move about it so the move around a lot. At this point in time, they all grow a thick winter coat so I don't have to blanket anyone. If they appear to be a little slow moving due to cold, damp weather, I'll give them a scoop of Bute for a day or two and their good. Other than that, I let them be horses and enjoy life. I do ride two of the three often but nothing too taxing. The 34 year old is completely retired except for long hand walks... |

| Are you talking about maintenance and such for older running horses or older retired horses? |

Location: North Dakota | My 24 year old is no longer running and hasn't been in many years but Cur-OST herbs keeps him feeling good even with all his arthritis. He has all his teeth and eats great so no special needs there. He hates blankets and is gigantic teddy bear in winter, so no special treatment there either. He gets his curost, lots of brushing, cookies and alfalfa--not that he needs it but because he loves it. |

| I run 2 older horses. They both get pentosan and I also like Actiflex 4000. I like to cold hose after every work and use liniment and BOT. Both of mine do well on Purina Senior feed and quality hay. |

| I put my 18 year old on turmeric powder. He has been out for a swollen suspensory, in the process of blocking that he went lame on both front, X-rays should arthritis in coffin joint. I waited to inject till his suspensory was healed. I took him in yesterday for a recheck, vet released him to work again and he is moving great on his front end now-vet was amazed. |

| I've got one who just turned 17 and I just bought a PHT knee wrap to help an old injury. Other than that he's just on total equine, alfalfa, msm, and previcox (the kind for horses). He goes to the vet when he's not feeling just right and he had his hocks done not too long ago. Other than that he's just my good ole go to guy. I do leave him turned out because I had read it was better for older horses or horses with a tendency to have arthritis to be able to move freely. He doesn't even know he's getting up there :) |

| My guy will be 19 this spring and is running better than he ever has!
He gets ADM SeniorGlo in addition to his hay. He has been getting just good grass hay, but this spring I'd like to try to find some high quality alfalfa to add in, or else start him on some alfalfa cubes. I'm also considering adding a supplement for respiratory support, as I run him on Lasix. He also gets Formula 707 Calming Essentials. He still thinks he's a firebreathing dragon despite his age!
He has some arthritis issues in his front fetlocks, an old (now healed) suspensory injury in his right hind, and a touch of arthritis in his hocks. After a tough workout or a run, I use BOT quick wraps on all 4 legs and hock boots. I also use them before a run to warm his legs up. For his fronts, I have the tallest quick wraps you can get so they can help his fetlocks and pasterns as much as possible. I keep Shoo-Fly boots on him during fly season any time his BOT isn't on, as I don't want him stomping flies and irritating joints.
Pre-run, I warm him up - trot and lope circles, counterarc, back - and then get off and stretch his legs before I adjust my saddle and tighten my cinch.
He gets Previcox leading up to a run, and is also on Pentosan.

 Am I really the Weirdo?

Location: Kansas | My 1993 model Joker is still running and feeling great. The last real run we made together was in the 2D at a tough local jackpot, and I don't think he's ready to retire quite yet. His maintenance/care routine is pretty simple: Keep him happy! He is barefoot and just gets a basic trim every 6-8 weeks depending on how he looks. I do haul him with Soft Ride boots on the front but that's more my own habit than his "need." I feed him SmartFlex Senior and SmartBreathe pelleted supplements from SmartPak, drizzle Healthy Coat (he really prefers that it be watered down a little) on his 3 pounds of Purina Impact Senior grain morning and night. He loves to be out in the pasture - any pasture really - but through the winter, I also feed him good quality prairie hay. He has a Back on Track sheet that he loves, and I either wrap his legs with BOT quick wraps, no bows or Draper quick wraps - all ceramic therapy. Joker gets an extended warmup with lots of walking at the start, and I strip him as soon as possible after a run. We are in the process of teaming him up with a 10-year-old youth rodeo competitor for the 2017 season as I think he deserves a slightly slower pace and much lighter rider. It's going to take a month or so for them to gel as a team, but he really tries to listen to her but still make her actually ride him. When they become confident in each other, I think he will help her grow a ton as a rider and she'll help him still feel like a champion.
