| Hi everyone, I had surgery yesterday to cut and repair disk that we're pushing into spinal cord. Anyone dealt with this and how long before you could go back to riding ? |

Location: Running my kids somewhere. | I had surgery on my neck; they removed and cleaned the area of the problem disk, put it a cadaver bone, straightened the vertebrae and plated everything together. Once the x-rays showed that things had grown together I was released. I was out 9 months. Good luck! It made a huge difference for me. |

| Unfortunately I'll be having this surgery done in the future. Interested to hear everyone's experiences as well. At this point my neurosurgeon is leaving it up to me to decide when I'm ready to do the surgery. How did you all know it was time? My neck is the area with stenosis, but I also having a bulging disc and I'm having issues with my lower back and SI. They tried an SI injection to see if that would give me some relief, and I guess it did help some, but did not get rid of all of the pain. I've tried pain meds, but they don't seem to help much. Muscle relaxers make me loopy, so I can't do those!
OP - Sorry to jump in on your thread, but I've never seen anyone discussing this and would love some info, too! I hope your recovery goes well! |

Location: SW MO | I had this surgery but it was pushing on my sciatic nerve (SP). Anyway, I had the surgery the first week in April, and I got back on a horse the first week of june. Went to the Bonus Race Finals that next week. But I also had two months of very rigorous physical therapy so that I could make it to that race. I had some pain from doing that but it didn't kill me |

I had my neck done when the migranes sent me home daily by 1:00 pm. I have issues with my lower back and SI as well. After multiple injections, blocks and nerve burning I had my left SI fused but it didn't make much difference. I was only out for 4-6 weeks with that one. |

Location: lost in missouri | I had this surgery twice once due to an injury i sustained in a slip, which i healed from completely and was doing great until a teenager texting and driving hit me at 65 mph i was at a dead stop. My handle on here is comeback kid because i came back again and got in the saddle after another back surgery. Each time i was really quiet and careful for the first 3 weeks the first time at 3 weeks i did get on and walk about 15 minutes a couple of days a week. at six weeks i was back in the saddle at a walk doing lots of excercises and on a very trusty steed some jogging. at 8 weeks i was back to riding a couple of hours a day all gaits and at 12 weeks i was back to doing it all. I did do physical therapy both times and i still do a lot of my stretches and i definitely work my core all the time to keep my abs and back muscles strong to help protect my back . I couldnt walk before i went into surgery from the discs putting pressure on my spinal cord and sciatic nerve. |

| They had been injecting my lower back because that's where the pain was I have herniated disc there but not bad enough for surgery. They finally done a spinal dye with cat scan and found T-12 was pushing on spinal cord he said that he had to do surgery to correct it. He said I would be out of work 4-6weeks for sure. |

| Thanks for sharing. I want to put this off as long as possible, mostly because I don't feel like I can really take things easy with a toddler and the rest of my family's crazy schedule. Did you find any alternative treatments that helped with the pain? I was thinking about trying the BOT clothing to sleep in. |

Location: lost in missouri | Nothing helped me. They put me on a nerve medicine to try to help the sciatia pain, it didnt. I did a lot of therapy to help, it didnt. I had 4 injections in my back at the area where the disc was pressing those didnt help. It took me saying no more just do the surgery because i was so done with being in pain and not being able to function. The surgery was the best thing i ever did. i wish i hadnt put it off for as long as i tried to the first time and hadnt let the dr's push into trying all the other stuff the second time and just done it. Before the second surgery i could not walk standing straight up and i had to shuffle my feet. when i came out of surgery and they got me up to walk i was able to walk standing straight up and i was able to stride out no more shuffling. When you are 35 years old and shuffling and hunched over life isnt fun. |

Location: Fairfield, IA | I had a lower lumbar discectomy performed in 2001 due to a ruptured disc. I wasn't riding horses at that time, so I really can't give you any input there.
However, from a long term standpoint, I have no issues whatsoever from the surgery. At my last post-op visit with the surgeon I asked him if there was any activities I should avoid; his reply was "go live a normal life"
I've taken up motorcycle riding and powerlifting since my surgery with no issues at all. |

Location: Texas | I had a neck fusion and a back fusion witching 10 days of each other. My doctor cleared me to ride after 4 months. I took it fairly slow but was back to running barrels a month after he cleared me to ride |

| Not to steal the thread, but while the subject of back surgery is being discussed does anyone know if my husband can get anything done for pain relief other than pain meds after two failed surgeries. The doctor says nothing can be done because he has periphial neurapathy.(sp).Have a great recovery strawfly special. |

Sean had a spinal cord stimulator implanted and he got a lot of relief from it. Until it got infected (never healed after surgery) and he had to have it removed. I don't know if that's anything that would work for your husband, but it was about a last resort for Sean after two surgeries, innumerable injections, and other procedures. Back problems are horrible to deal with, so prayers for all of y'all dealing with this. |
