Location: SW North Dakota | veintiocho - 2017-02-20 12:57 PM I think after they start moving out and seeing some country they start to enjoy it as much as we do :). I had a colt that would do 3-4miles before hitting the arena and loooved it. His engine was pretty big :)
She's really very broke, but like you said, open country riding seems to be a little different. Thankfully, we have plenty of space here to ride a few miles in any direction and not have to open gates or ride past anyone's place. She will get a taste of some ranch work very soon (she may be sorting pairs with my husband right now), she'll get used to drag calves at the brandings this spring and will move cows around this summer in the badlands as she's being patterned. Some ranch riding in rough country helps them learn where their feet are and having a bead on the back end of a cow keeps their brains engaged. She'll learn to look forward to arena days! haha.
This winter, I think we will send her to my friends in Oklahoma so she can rope calves and feet while it's too frozen to ride up here. So, her life is planned out for her. Barrels, poles, goats, breakaway and heeling- pretty sure it's possible for her.

Love that you guys work your youngsters out side the arena, so good for their souls and makes a heck of a all around horse for the furture. I loved getting my young ones off a working ranch they see so much and like you said they learn where there feet are at all times.  |

There is a lot of water running with the warm temps we've had, so the little mare got to practice creeks at length! HAHA. Ell doesn't think she's ever seen cattle at all. She might be living in the pasture with the butcher steers soon- it won't take her long to learn that horses rule and cattle drool.

She is coming 5 and was started as a 3yo. She's essentially "broke," just now needs some world experience. She had a very nice start- which totally makes her worth the money I spent.
Plus, the sale was very smooth, all of the people were super nice and it was easy! Feel good story. :)

THANK YOU for your help in this happy ending! My sister had said they were nice people, but your recommendation made me a lot more comfortable tripping the trigger on buying her sight unseen.
We really bought the mare for about the cost of 5 month's training, which makes me feel a little guilty. She's pretty soft, really quite broke and wants to be good. I think the only thing she missed (other than open country riding) is being tied to the patience post long enough to get patient! She's wired right, so it shouldn't take her too long to relax and rest. |
