Stuff like this makes me absolutely hate a lot of horse people.   This industry needs closer and stricter governing!!!!   Owners, pay attention, check on your horses every week while at the trainer's place!

Please don't say we need more governing.

Right now in Alberta the veterinary association is trying to make it illegal to hire chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists unless you have direct veterinary supervision

I agree. Pretty soon they will tell you what animals you are allowed to have, what you have to do for a job etc.

I guess that I read her statement as saying....we need stiffer "abuse" laws..... and stiff consequences for those trainers who treat horses like this ..... JMO!

I am going to give everyone a heads up too. Choose some who others recommend. If a barrel horse trainer, watch what they are running notice the condition of the horses that the person is running. I take good care of my horses but my trainer takes even better care than I do. Out of about 200 barrel horses at a large quarter horses show, the horses that my trainer had there were the best fitted, the best groomed , and the best fed. She has had my horse for 2 years and whenever I go over ther the horse is perfectly groomed and happy. I might add that her stalls are cleaned anytime a horse poops. There is never manure in a stall or urine either

Best to "not" let them know you're coming if you're checking.  Kind of like when people are coming to your house you do a lot of extra cleaning but if they just drop in "whoops."

If you get the word out who the trainer was so that no one use the person, their clientele will probably be limited. You certainly need before and after pictures.

This is just plain awful! so very sorry :-(

Call me crazy but every time I have sent one of my horses to any trainer, I would go and check on them often, regardless if they were either one hour away or 5! but that's just me.

Praying your filly recovers nicely from such a horrible ordeal... bless her heart!

SC Wrangler - 2017-02-25 2:22 PM How many times has this same story been covered on this forum??  Ultimately the horses condition is the responsibility of the owner.  I do not understand this mentality of dumping a horse at the trainers and not physically checking on their welll being.  A horse does not decline to a "bag of bones" over night.

You are right, but when said trainer is a trusted "friend" you have no reason to doubt them.  Pictures can also be deceiving on condition - because I asked and got pictures and he didn't look bad.   Only when I picked him up was I shocked at my horse's condition.

I totally agree! You're sending them to a trainer, but the horse is still your responsibility! Last horse we sent to a trainer, after multiple referrals and seeing other horses he'd ridden, started out ok with contact often. Said he would send videos. Then the horse got hurt and needed $$ for shoes, hmm ok, next week no contact and couldn't get a hold of him so I said I'll just bring him home. I didn't have a good feeling anymore. Took TWO WEEKS after that to finally get the horse and he left him and another horse lose in stalls at a roping. He kept the halters and I had no idea who this other horse belonged to. Both were thin, but the other horse was a lot worse off than mine. I don't think my horse was even rode and no shoes on him. I think the guy had some personal issues going on..

Being a young horse she'll make a come back don't worm just yet let her gut adjust to having feed. put on a good pre/probiotic. I'm impressed with Forco and plenty of hay no grain yet. love on her daily , animals are smarter than we think. Good luck with her.

We can all be too trusting.  A friend of my son sent a horse to a trainer to rope on.  Owner ropes and trainer after a couple of months didn't think he was a good roping prospect.  Ok so the horse is bred to run barrels. Owner sends him to former NFR qualifier who kept him for several months.  Trainer was several states away but could never get any video to see his progress so he finally just went to get him.  This is a really sweet horse.  Calm and really no bad habits, but skinny, skinny, skinny.  Owner sent him to my son for his girls to ride to get their thoughts.  He works a decent pattern and is easy to get along with but he needs groceries.  There is no reason for this horse to be in the shape he is in.   He has a lot of money invested in this horse between the cost of the horse and the 2 trainers.   Sadly, the owner trusted this trainer by reputation and did not ask enough questions.
