I saw this on facebook last week, but haven't seen anything on here. I apologize if it was posted before, but I'd rather see it twice then not at all.
Just a heads up when you are planning your races!

Amandacammarano was nice enough to send me this link:

Thanks for the heads up. We are far away from there and I don't compete yet, but I have friends that do.

No problem, I'd rather be informed!
I edited the subject to show Denton county..... Just to make it easier to see what part of Tx it is confirmed.

This is WAY too close to home for comfort. I have quite a few friends that were at both those races. My back issues have prevented me from riding much or I would have been at them as well. Prayers for everyone who was there and double prayers for the affected horses and owners!

Is there a vaccination for this? I agree disinfect as well as you can, though that is difficult when your on the road.

There are vaccinations for EHV, it's said I believe that they may not prevent the strain we've seen in the last few years, but lessen the effects and give the horse a better chance of making it.

On that topic - what vaccine is everyone using? We vaccinate our own and I'm seeing several brands and options...which I don't remember seeing last year...but that was a year ago...

I thought I read last year during the last outbreak, that vaccinating for EHV-1 made no difference in the horses that came down with the neurological form.

The vaccine is not protective against the neurologic strain of EHV-1. However, routine vaccinations will reduce the risk of your horses getting the more common respiratory viruses that horses are likely to get when hauling.. like the non neuropathic EHV1 and influenza.

This whole recent ordeal is a great case for why you should vaccinate horses who compete and haul. Most of the horses who have had fevers and respiratory signs have been testing positive for flu, only one so far is EHV 1 positive, the one that the TAHC press release is about. This is also a good reminder about hygiene- disinfect stalls prior to use, don't let your horses touch noses if you can prevent it (which in stalls thats hard but when you're riding around or in holding areas be aware). Don't share grooming supplies or buckets with horses that aren't from your trailer. Don't share bits or disinfect prior to putting them in your horse's mouth.. all of these things we frequently overlook.

Here is a good article that summarizes EHV-1.
