Location: NE Arkansas | I just got my three year old home from the trainer an nothing I have is fitting her. He was using a coats an was able to ride in that. He actually said good luck finding a saddle lol. I have tried two other saddles an they just roll an pop up in the back. I am considering having one made for her, it just makes me sick to spend that kind of money an then in a couple of years have to go through the trouble again when she grows more. I just thought i would ask some opinions on what everyone else thought.

| Can you subsidize with a good/proper pad until she's finished growing? |

| You can pm me and I'll resize them for you.
Sounds a lot like my horse. EVERYTHING I tried had way too much rock to the bars and would do just as you said, pop up and roll.
Do you have Facebook? I can talk easier on there if you want :) I've tried just about every brand out there unfortunately. |

Location: Montana | I'm going through the same thing with my 3 y/o! The trainer's saddle actually fit her good, but I'm having a hard time fitting her. Same issues: rolling or popping up in the back. I'm not really sure if I need FQHB or Semi QHB anymore...when I first started working with her I used a Semi-qhb saddle, and it didn't fit. Then I used my FQHB saddle, and it doesn't fit, and now the Semi qhb saddle is fitting better, though not good (and it doesn't fit me, grrr), so I'm not really sure where to turn or what to try. I don't want to spend a load on a saddle for a 3 y/o either, sooo this is more of a bump, as I'd love to see some of your answers. |

Location: Where I am happiest | Meet with all your friends and put everyones saddle on without a pad and see which fits your horse best. Whether you meet just to ride at an arena, or do it at a race. It depends on the tree as to how it will fit. Not just the size of the gullet. A friend of ours was having the exat same problem you are describing. We all met to ride, there were 8 of us and we went through everybodys saddles trying on her horse and a Burns saddle was the one that fit her best. We tried Coats, Martin, 2 different Caldwell's, ect. ect. ect and a Burns was what fit her horse. |

Location: NE Arkansas | It's hard for sure. I'm not gonna be starting her on the pattern till this fall when she will go back to the trainer. An from now till then she will probably change a lot. I have been told she is really flat an round like a barrel is why it's so difficult to get one to fit her. I'm thinking if I can find a saddle to fit that I could ride in for now would be great it doesn't necessarily have to be a barrel saddle.

I have borrowed a friends saddle for now. It doesn't roll as bad an I was able to ride her for awhile in it. But it just doesn't feel right to me on her at all. |

If I have learned anything with my saddle fit fiasco's-having 2 horses that would actually buck, it is that gullet is about 2% of the saddle fit equation. Rock, and the shape/spread/width of the bars. Those bars are IMO 98% of saddle fit. Even with a flare in the front, those bars can be set in too much and pinch. 99.9% of your saddles REGARDLESS of brand, all have the same tree fit. If they have a tweak here or there to make it their "own" tree, it is all in the wrong place to make a difference in fit.
I know they can't possible fit everything, but I just lucked out and sold my Triple Creek to buy another Meleta Brown that was available. I have had nearly every brand out there and they all pinched in exactly the same spot. I do have a gorgeous Ammerman that I hang on to, because sadly, it is just too pretty to sell. Maybe I will own something that it fits in the future. |

| Your horse looks a lot like mine, not a whole lot of contour to his back, just straight and round like a sausage lol. Here's my little guy without a saddle, super straight through his loin. Can't have much rock at all on his saddle.
I tried tons of different saddles and in short, the best ones I found were the extreme performance Circle Y, I think it's the tree in the Lisa Lockhart saddles. I don't care for Circle Y's quality and the way they ride but it could get you by for now and you can find them used pretty easily.
The other one I absolutely adore is my Jeff Smith C3. It sits me deep and is super comfortable, the quality is great, and it fits for the most part and doesn't roll. The tree could be a little bit flatter for my particular horse and in the future I may go for a custom tree, but it's not making him sore and it fits him for the most part so I'll stick with it until I can afford custom.

Is the Extreme Performance saddle by Circle Y the same tree as the old Provens were? And what bar angle do you recommend (on Circle Y its either reg or wide, I'm sure you already know this :) )? Sorry, not trying to steal the OP's thread, just trying to gather more info.

I honestly don't know if it's the same tree as the old provens, that'd be a good question for Circle Y! I was just at a lesson one night and my instructor looked at me and said "That saddle is dumping you forward, here come put mine on" and it fit him really well, I just didn't care much for it. I believe his saddle is the regular but I'm not positive. My horse isn't overly wide by any means, he's just super round and I think that's the issue I'm having with most saddles is they're made for more "curvy" horses lol |

Location: Opelousas, LA | I have a Masters saddle that fits that kind of back better than anything I have tried. I actually bought it because it was inexpensive and light, wanted to use it for breaking babies but it was way to wide for really young horses. Everything I am riding now has way bigger shoulders that back so it doesn't fit them at all.
