| we have a filly about a month old that toes out significantly on one front leg. the other is straight. is this something that can correct as they grow, or is likely to always be that way?? will shoeing help?? i've never had this with any foals before so im not familiar... thanks

Location: Texas | Shoeing/trimming often can't correct toeing in or out. On a foal that's normally going to be caused by a flaw above the hoof. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | There is a surgery called periosteal? stripping (I think that's it) that lets them correct this. It pretty much must be done by 2 to 2.5 months old though I think because that's when your window to correct it closes. Should be done by a vet with lots of experience with this and momma and baby are going to be on stall rest for a month or so. |

Location: In The Land of Cotton | There is a procedure they can do for the leg. It is periosteal stripping. Basically a GOOD EQUINE LAMENESS VET can do this in his office. The procedure takes no time at all. It should not be very expensive either - usually $300-500. This along with trimming will correct it. |

Location: Southeastern Idaho | Trimming didn't work for my big baby. And we started early with a knowledgeable farrier. As others have said, there is a procedure that I wish I had tried! If it is serious I would get your baby to a good vet and work with them before wasting time just trimming.

Location: Opelousas, LA | Get that baby to a good lameness vet and have it evaluated ASAP, some of the angular conformation faults can be easily corrected and not cost much either if you do it early. It is awful trying to deal with soreness, chips, arthritis etc. from an angular knee defect that could have been easily corrected as a baby, especially when it is a super talented, otherwise athletic young horse. I think the last one we did cost around $300 plus regular trims, she is a very sound correct yearling now. |

Sounds like you have a crooked leg ...
Front legs should be plumb from the chest thru the center of the hoof.
Tie a washer on a string and hold it at center of leg at chest level ..
washer should just hang and be at hoof level ..
You will see where the crooked starts ..
usually at the knee ... will be turned or slanted instead of flat and
facing forward ...
Or you may see a twist in the cannon bone or ankle ..
Spending lots of money may help it improve but the joints will
always be affected and will not stand up when horse is old
enough to be put to work .....
So .. save your money and see what route Mother Nature takes
as the horse continues to grow ...
As you know ... there is no refunds for vet bills when their
vetting doesn't work ...
On FB the owner and about a 100 blind people think this 11 month
old baby has no faults and is a good possible to win the
All American Futurity ..
