Location: MN | Are OATS bad for an ulcer prone horse?
Her horses current diet (just being switched from a senior feed) : 8 lbs alfalfa cubes morning and night 1 lb OATS to mix supplements. 8 oz flax a day Turned out on pasture 24/7 with access to quality coastal round bale.
Thank you in advanced! |

Location: North Dakota | Everything in moderation. 1 lb of oats is not going to do them any harm. Dr. Schell has talked about this on his forum when people ask about help with ulcer prone horses. It looks like a good, clean diet. |

| I had a bad run in with ulcers last year and my horses are doing well again and all get 1 1/2 lbs of oats a day. It looks ok to me. |

Thank you. I helped her come up with it earlier this week so it is a very recent change but she keeps hearing from others that oats (sugar) are bad for ulcers. I told her the same thing as you did but she isnt quite convinced. I honestly searched the entire internet trying to find proof that they were harmful but I couldnt find a thing. |

Whole oats, alfalfa, Whole flax seeds should make her horse shine
in the dark ... this is a well balanced feeding program!!
I add MoorMans loose GroStrong Minerals to my feeding program ..
a handful in their feed every other day sure keeps them happy
and healthy ..
Whole oats has nothing to do with ulcers or tummy problems ...
oats have a very good fiber content and are not pasty ...
it is the barley and wheat that feed mills sneak into their horse feeds that
create a paste in a digestive wrinkle that are a problem and
owners that do not provide enough hay or very poor feeding program
that creates the digestive wrinkles due to an empty tract .... horses
are constant grazers which owners forget about ...
Your friend will give you hugs in 30 on your feeding program!!

Thank you very much!! I just hope she sticks with it and want to show her how much this should help her horse. People keep telling her that starch is bad. Starch is no good for the horse. Starch is terrible for ulcers. I have asked her to stick with me for at least 2 months then she can fire me if she doesn't do well on this. So we shall see! Crossing my fingers. I'll also pass along that good info. Thank you! |

| Depending on the horse and the quantity/guality of oats it can case issues.
If the horse is insulin resistant, oats are not a good thing, if the horse has foundered at some point, oats can cause laminitis episodes.
Pssm horses may be affected by oats.
Oats are fermented in the hind gut, and with the immediate sugar release it can cause a shift in the ph the horse can become more acidic exacerbating ulcers, causing laminitis, and increasing the inflammatory response.
Each horse is unique and can respond differently.
I was always told never give over 1lb of whole oats in one serving.
My horses get half a pound a day.
The questions I would ask why does the horse need grain?
What is missing from the diet?
What features does the person want to change?
I give oats so my horses can get their supplements, and so they come up out of the pasture, they get everything they need through their hay, and mineral. |

Completely understand that. She is only feeding 1lb total a day. That is to only give supplements. The horse has nothing you listed above, she is trying to improve the horses physical appearance as she appears dull. She also said the wanted to improve her attitude but she did just find out this horse has kissing spine. She's got access to salt and minerals, pasture, and coastal hay 24/7. |

| If she is full looking even with flaxseed, you might try a vitamin/mineral supplement. I had a mare that was dull looking and not shedding off as nicely as the others. I added a vitamin/mineral supple and in just days she was shedding out nicely and is very shiny. |
