I have never had issue but I have heard of some horses losing a patch of hair near the site of pentosan. Couple years ago they changed the labeling to IV. I would just give it IV.

I often wonder why the vets scrub the joints for the injections but not the site to main line or muscle shot. I know the joint is different but still I would think you would want any injection site to be clean I always alcohol to main line .

It's just plain laziness that a vet doesn't take a few seconds to prep any injection site. There's no excuse, really, other than laziness and the fact that many clients don't realize that it's terrible technique.
If vets don't prep an injection site, then that sends a signal to lay people that they don't have to either. Imagine if people went out and rolled in poop off and on all day, and a doctor gave them an injection without any skin prep.

Hot Rod - 2017-04-08 5:34 PM I gave my mare a shot of Pentosan in the back of her hind leg last Tues and it made her so sore she was lame on that leg for three days.  I'm supposed to give her another one this Tuesday but I don't want to do that to her again.   I chose her hind leg instead of her neck because I didn't want her to get sore there, but I think I would rather have that than have her so lame.  Do you think I should devide it into two shots and give one on each side?  Any suggestions??
Can you describe your routine for IM injection?
My routine is to just decide where I'm going to inject the shot. This shot, I decided on her left hind leg, because it's her right hind leg she is sore in. I just petted her and then slapped her a few time and stuck the needle in, made sure no blood came out, attached the syringe and administered the liquid. I didn't inject it slow, like someone else suggested, after I had given it. Maybe that would have helped. She did act like it stung a bit as it went in. I usually give vaccines in the neck. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do this shot in her neck next time.
Not that this has anything to do with this particular incident, but I think your description is probably what most horse owners do. I shudder when I see how some people give IM injections, including a lot of vets. No alcohol or surgical soap. Just brush the dirt off and jam it in. Then they wonder why this drug or that drug causes abscesses so frequently. I realize that's probably not what happened here......just wanted to make a point. I assume she isn't lame now.

Thank you for your opinion and input.  I had a vet tell me once that his belief was with a wet injection site there was more chance of dragging bacteria on the needle into the skin.  So I've always gone with that. (You know about opinions, everyone has one)   And no, she is not lame anymore.

It's a creative alibi, but it's not true. As my high school football coach used to shout at me, "Just what the hell is wrong with doing it right, Harris!"

FLITASTIC - 2017-04-08 5:04 PM Just curious , where did you get your pentosan from ??? Your vet here in the USA or did you use the horse pre race stuff??? Most pentosan is now labeled IV. But some have had issues with the horse pre race. I never have so I'm curious. Thanks

It is from Horse Pre race but it is actually Pentosan Gold.  I bought it a couple of years ago but it is not expired.  I know I gave a couple of shots a few years ago when I bought it and never had a reaction, but I don't remember where I gave it.  This bottle is labeled IM.  I don't know what to do about her next shot.  I don't want her sore like she was.

I wouldn't use that anymore if I was you. I could be wrong but I thought compounded drugs were legally only supposed to have 6month expiration dates. I don't think that site sells things that are inspected by the FDA but I could be wrong. If you get prescription drugs without a prescription, how do you know what you're actually getting?

The compounding pharmacy I work for is FDA registered and they make Pentosan, let me know if I can help in any way. I don't make any $ from referrals, I just want to help when I can.

Could you PM your pharmecy's info, please. I am going to ask my vet if she can write a prescription for me. Thank you
