Just needing some people to bounce some ideas and thoughts off of.

My 8 yr old gelding has stopped running.. which isnt like him to say the least.
quick back ground info... bought him in Febuary 2016.. he was patterned well and hauled to small local jackpots where, he ran in the 1D pretty consistently, but CREAMED barrels. couldnt leave a barrel up.

Well, i spend the first 8 months, almost falling off of him every run because i just couldnt keep up. And trying to hold him off barrels didnt help either.
So i took him to basics, backed him off and cleaned up his turns. with the help of some good help.

now here i am, having super super pretty runs, he just isnt clocking anymore. hes really using himself and working like a top!
Prior to to everything, the only soundness/health issues have been.. small case of uclers, cleared those up.. and shoeing problem which was also fixed. he is seen regularly by his vet so im confindent it isnt a soundness issue. i did change his feeding program (when the uclers came up) other than that everything has stayed the same.

Im worried i made him forget how to run by trying to get with him, then slowing him down to clean some things up. hes on a good work out program, breezed the whole 9 yards. He doesnt feel off or slugish just SLOW!

--- his previous owner was *known* for running him more than she should have been at home, and would exhib the crap out of him at a show.. Maybe its me, maybe im not pushing him as hard as i think.. im not sure. i have videos if people will PM me i can send you before and afters... im really bummed about this because even though when i bought him a year ago, he hit alot of barrels to be either winning the barrel race or atleast top 5. now im mid 2D.. sense hes only 8 and this is really his first offical year being hauled could it just be a phase??? ugh!!!

So with the new style, pretty runs, not knocking barrels - was he topping the 1D and is now suddenly 2D?

Or the new style has never been 1D.

If the latter I would say time, you're basically seasoning him again and bringing him along with the new correct style. He's going to have to gain his own confidence on the pattern.

You could breeze him at home if you didn't think it would set him back mentally.

My other thought is you're subconciously holding him/overriding/not trusting him because you're worried it'll all fall apart.

old style he was 1d but hitting barrels, and not just scrubbing them or catching them on the back side like trying to cut m legs off cheating.

now hes correct but mid 2d

Well, technically now he's faster than he was, because now you're actually getting a time that counts...

yeah i know... but it was nice to say "i wouldve won the barrel race by 3 tenths but i hit a barrel" instead of.. " i was 8 tenths off the pace"

Some horses are fast on the clock because they cream the barrels. Theyre fast on the flat but lost time on the turns. When they run correctly and need to take this extra steps to get around and that's the difference in time.

There are lots of exercises online to try to increase the power out of your turns so I'd start there.

I used to have a horse here that would never win a flat race against anyone but she'd beat nearly everyone in a barrel race cause that horse could get in and out of a turn so fast it was like being slingshot out. She made up for what she lost across the arena in how fast she could get in and out.

Unfortunately i dont think thats the case with him either.. hes an own son of eddie stintson and he can flat out FLY. He is SO athletic!! and he really makes that move and sticks that leg.

his style is the same as it was before, i just went back and got more control of his shoulder and his ribs. His "style" has stayed the same. just now, when i pick up he willing moves over instead of leaning on me and getting a barrel. he just isnt hussling and gritty like he was.

Now that you have him "cleaned" up, stay off the pattern. Keep him legged up without picking on him. One Bute tablet 48 hours before a race. Light riding day before race, bath with green alcohol, witch hazel, vinegar, and absorbing. Now he should feel good enough to buck you off or clock for you.beggars can't be choosers.

I think you need to be patient. It will come. Personally, I think it is better to run the perfect pattern than say I won the barrel race but hit a barrel. That does not count in my world.

This--it doesn't matter how fast he is.  If he is going AROUND the barrels instead of cutting them off, then he is traveling a further distance than he was before, which translates into more time.  I'm not saying he still can't be 1D, but this does factor in to his time.

Yes! he won plently of barrel races prior to this, just would cheat. he placed 3rd and his first ever PCA rodeo, first rodeo ever for that matter. In top 5 at our state show. Ran in the 1D all 3 goes of Dixie nationals. He's nice! When he doesn't cheat.

Now hes as honest as the day is long but just isn't hussling like he used too.

I really agree with this. If he's not cutting off the backsides you are actually adding a little bit of time. I think it's going to take a bit to get that confidence up for him that way you're making him run now! I'd honestly rather see a horse run correctly than drop or cut off the backsides. Hitting barrels isn't fun at all! I don't think I'd breeze him, at all. I'd probably just keep making the same runs without mistakes. Keep working him the same. The times will come. It might take 6 mos it might take a year or 2 but I think consistency is key.

I think he'll get faster. He just needs to get used to working this way. As some have said, be patient. Lots of slow work, no fast work, unless you enter him.
