Would love to hear success stories of gelding a stallion over 15 years of age. Vet is concerned which really makes my friend nervous.

Actually its highly problematic and very risky. Much higher chance of death in an older stallion.

Not a 15 year old, a 8 year old. He was such a laid back boy, gelding made him a real marshmellow.....he is the one in my avitar. But no problems at all.

The racehorse War Emblem was gelded a couple years ago at the age of 17.  We just saw him in March when we visited old friends farm.  Gelding him was the only way to bring him back to the US from Japan because he would not give them a semen sample to make sure he wasn't bringing a STD back.

I'm gonna ask a dumb question cause I know nothing about studs, but is there no way to get a sample even if he doesn't "volunteer" it??

I had a response all ready to type out, but started thinking about different scenarios & decided that's a good question!!

Hopefully the poster will respond!!!

Friend had a 17 year old stud who had been very actively breeding in younger years. Castrated at 17, he had no healing problems and recognized he was a gelding. He was not run in a pasture with mares, however.

We had success doing this. Long story short, ended up with a black stallion that two vets determined to be between 10-15 years. I had no idea of his past life when he came to me but decided he was a nice enough horse to geld and be given a chance. Expected to be cryptorchid and do the surgery but he ended up being a high flanker and were able to get both without being too invasive. He healed up just fine. You would've never known he was a stud in his previous life...but he had that disposition all along and is why I gave him a chance.

Had a friend geld an 8-year-old stallion and never had a problem. healed fine.
