My job has landed me in PA for the summer. I'm surprised at how much I actually like it here! I haven't had any trouble finding somewhere to keep horses and ride, which is amazing to me.

Do have a question though...what is the best source of alfalfa? Am I better off just getting cubes shipped in do you think?

Not too sure what to do there and thought I'd inquire what the folks in the NE do!

Thanks!!

The amish usually get shipments in from Colorado or Canada. I would ask around. We frequently travel to Lancaster/New Holland for the horse sale.

Welcome to PA!!

What part are you in???

Alfalfa is hard to find out here in Western PA.  Not many people grow it.  You might get lucky and find some hay with a bit of alfalfa...i've seen some for sale on craigslist.  It got to the point I couldn't find what I wanted, so I just feed pellets now.  Became too much of a hassle.

My dad grows some with it in there but not straight alfalfa anymore due to bugs and a couple years ago it rained a lot then got really hot and burned the field (not with literal fire).

I buy pellets, 50 lb bag for $14 at our feedmill.

Lots of it in Ohio no need to haul from Neb. find a dairy framer in your area. you will not find any three wire bales or large squares bout there is a lot of kicker bales around 60-80 lbs.

Not to change subject but this post kind of humored me a little. People are under the assumption that this area up here is all cities or something but once you get out of the cities it is about as Redneck as you can get. LOL. Also, the PA,OH,WV area is a BIG barrel racing area. This seems to surprise a lot of people that have never been here.

You are not far from us.
HJF Horse Hay and Cattle has really good alfalfa hay he ships in from out west. We got some 3 wire 5th cutting for one of our broodmares that was real nice. His name is John Vidovich if you want to look him up on Facebook.

Yes, people out west are amazed when I tell them that during the summer we can drive 1/2 hour to an hour and hit a jackpot every night of the week.

When I think about Pennsylvania and horses I immediately think about Willowbrook Farms and their beautiful ads that they had on the back of the QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL. It cost them about $1500 per month to get that back outside cover each month and that was 40 years ago. No telling how much it is today.

If you could let me know some of them that'd be great! I'm in Mercer county and I seem to miss all of them

Wednesdays will be Hoppels Arena in Lisbon, OH---they are starting soon.
Thursdays is Tri State in East Liverpool, OH
Then on weekends---who knows ???? Tons of shows going on just depends which direction you want to go.
