Do you have local riders who are sponsored by the companies you're after? They may have a relationship that can help. Or dealers of the companies you're looking to get - Purina sponsors some of the races and events around here for example through their local dealers.

I think sponsorships on all levels come down to producing a good event that they want to be associated with, that pulls good numbers and will give them exposure.

I don't know if any of the riders are sponsored or not. This arena at one time(60s-90s) was the place to be. It changed hands in early 90s and while the new owners had high hopes for it, the ones they had managing it, let it go, ground got bad and reputation got bad with it. It's under new management that has worked wonders on improving the ground etc. I started producing the barrel races last fall. The reputation is slowly getting better as word of mouth is getting around of the improvements. So with that being said, we aren't bringing in record numbers yet, but its growing. I know one way to get the numbers up is added money and prizes at events. Should i contact company's directly via email, phone, letters or go through a dealer?

Your local businesses are going to be the ones most likely to be responsive at this point then - the places where local people are going to go. Anything from the feed store to insurance agent to truck dealership.

I would put together a nice letter and some sponsorship options - what does $xxx get them? Sometimes I think it is easier to give them options on amounts rather than leave it up to them. And drop it off in person so you can shake a hand and thank them for their time.

At the grain elevator that I manage we get asked to sponsor things all the time. Sometimes you need to tell us what is normally expected as a donation. Is it $25 or $250. Some of your first time sponsors just really don't have a clue

Bumping this for more input. The best things I have found out is to have a well written out sponsorship sheet for them to see. They will be more likely to sponsor or donate if they know what it is for and what they are going to get for their money. I think a well orgainzed approach is what most companies like.

Please know that the big names get bombarded with requests DAILY. 30-40 requests per day. Most of them have already budgeted for or have relationships with the ones that they are going to sponsor. I do know that many will give you prizes or award money to be used on awards (their products only if asking places like Classic Equine or Professional's Choice, Fastback Ropes, etc) if you give them your contestant email list. many times that is the only exchange you will get with them since there are so many individuals and clubs/groups/associations wanting money or items.
