I got a "free" gelding the other day that doesn't need to be competed on at least for a while, so I will be doing some trail riding on him. My question is - is a barrel saddle ok for long all day or 1/2 day rides? Should I look at another type of western saddle if this is what I am going to be doing on him?

As long as it fits him, I would think you could trail ride in whatever kind of saddle you like.

That is kinda what I was thinking but trail saddles look different from barrel saddles to me. I just want to make sure, this guy deserves my best efforts.

I used to do half day rides in my barrel saddle. As long as it fits the horse any saddle will work.

I personally prefer a hard seat saddle to trail ride in.
Anything with a flatter seat will be more comfortable in all day instead of the round dome type the barrel saddle seat has. It's all personal preference tho.
I will say when you see a "cowboy" saddle or a day worker's saddle they are always a will james or association tree with a hard flat seat. Those boys ride all day. You won't ever catch a dayworker in a padded seat. It sounds funny but it's true. Hard flat seats are the bees knees!

I have always used my barrel saddles for everything from teampenning, breakway roping, helping with cattle and just plain old trailriding.. But really love my Bob Marshall for a lazy day of riding.

Me and hardseats just dont get along, I have no padding in the behind so I have the padding on my saddles to makeup for no padding on the old behind.

Ha! I have PLENTY of natural padding back there!

I, too, have always worked cattle in my barrel saddle and I have noticed the cowboys do all have hard seat saddles, as does my husband's king ranch saddle he cowboyed in. Thanks for all the replies.

All the trail riders around here ride in Tucker saddles that are more like sitting in your Lazyboy. They have well padded seats. I show up with my barrel saddle. If you decide to get a trail saddle, I would get one of those Wintec saddles. They are comfortable, seem to fit most horses, and are cost effective.

The cowboys like the slick/hard seated saddles cause they have to beable to move alot and get out of them a million times a day while working. They dont like a padded seat that's not going to let them move around alot but I have seen padded work saddle's with vinyl like slick materials but that was in the really older cowboy saddles.
