Location: The Lone Star State		I finally got one and its almost done being set up. How often do you put your horses on it and for how long? How do you train your younger ones or do you just put them on and go? Obviously they are broke to tie, lead etc. Just not "horse walker broke"

This is not a substitute for riding but I am so busy I need this to help keep them in shape.

The race horse trainer I worked for would break horses to the walker by attaching a large metal ring to the snap then loop the lead through the ring and walk on the inside that way if they blew up they had an escape and didn't hurt themselves or others. As they became accustomed to it he would then hook them on and still walk on the inside a bit with them, but after a few times it was hook and walk away. His were also taught to be hooked up/unhooked while it was still running in order to keep others going. This was due to the fact that walkers were being shared with other trainers at the time and he didn't want to stop someone else's horse from their exercise regiment that was in motion.

I start mine at an hour. I work them up to 2-3 hours for the horses I'm running. I also ride them 4-5 days a week. Using the walker in combination with riding I strongly feel I get 1/2 second more out of them than I would with just riding. For my younger horses I love it because in between rides they won't get fresh. If they know how to tie and give to pressure I will put them on a longer rope and just let them figure it out. It also helps to put an old veteran on ahead of them for them to follow going around. Mine has 4 speed settings, I like setting 1&2 the best. I think it's best for them to go longer at a slower pace than almost at a trot for less time.
