| What is your own experience with a horse with digital flexor tendon lesions?? My horse was ultrasounded last night and that was his diagnosis. It's high on the tendon.
I have ZERO experience with this! :(
Vet said it was too early to give a prognosis, but could range from permanently lame to a full recovery, with lots in between. She will revisit with me in one week and then one month and we will have a better idea of how he's healing.
Currently on stall rest, 30 mins hand walking, standing wraps, poultice 12hrs for the next 3 days, bute.... |

| As a general rule ( ANd a ton of vets have confirmed this with me) ONE YEAR off and whatever is not healed in 1 year will never be, you got what you got at that point |

| Wow!!!!!!!!! One year off?!?!
I can give him however long he needs - I have patience and want this horse to last as long as possible (he'll stay with me his entire life), but I didn't know it would take that long! He's already angry about stall rest day 2! |

Location: Southern Indiana | Superficial or deep flexor? Front or back leg? What percentage was the tear? These things make all the difference as far as recovery time. Superficial tendon tears usually heal pretty good. Deep are the ones that are difficult and take lots of time. Your looking at 6 months minimum recovery time. Most take 9-12 months. I'm assuming there's lots of inflammation since she wants to re-ultra sound in a week. I would cold hose or apply ice then poultice at night. |

| It's a front leg, but I'm not sure of percentage or if it's deep or superficial. The vet did say it was at the top of the tendon, which is better than the bottom.
The leg was pretty swollen from the knee down. He was in standing wraps overnight (after cold hosing) and the swelling was down a bit this morning. You can see the structure of his leg now but it's still swollen. He's wrapped with poultice right now.

| I think it was the superficial. I watched the ultrasound and it was the far left tendon on the screen (or the top). I'm looking at images online and they all seem to have the exact same layout, so I think it was the SDFT. |

Location: Southern Indiana | None of mine ever swelled a whole bunch except this last on the back leg but he sprung his ankle too. I would say your prognosis is good. My mare tore hers in both from legs (one healed went back to running and the other tore). Both were high superficial. I never did any special treatments like shockwaves or prp. Just stall rest and then slowly increased the amount of exercise. I mostly just used poultice, bot, & pht. You should be able to ride about 4-6 months in and be back running in 9 months to a year. Really the more time off they get, the better it is for them. I've dealt with this 4 times now :( soft tissue injuries aren't bad they just take a long time to heal and strengthen. |

When the vet says I can stop the standing wraps, I have magnaCu wraps I can put on him. He's hating the stall rest. Anything I can do to make it easier for him? |

| Oh yay - my other horse came up this morning with a very swollen rear fetlock. I guess she heard that she was going to be the main focus for the next year and decided to take matters into her own hands. ?? |

Location: Texas | they usually take around 6 months to heal and get to a point where you can get them back into work... probably 9-12 months until you're competing. hard to say without being there and looking at the extent of the injury. |

Location: Warsaw,NY | I have a mare with DDFT tear from a cut under her fetlock and getting infected. She had tendon sheath infection into the fetlock joint. She has a supposrt shoe on to give her the support she needs, the infection is all gone finally. she will never be 100% again but most likely comfortable enough to be a pasture pet. She is 19 and doesnt need to be ridden again. I have a friend treating a 4yr old with same exact thing, exept her tear is outer mine is inner. he vet bascially told me I would need to put her down as they didnt think we would get rid of infection. she had 2 abscesses that blew out the sides of her leg. she wasnt thriving, stopped eating. So i brought her home to euth. When i got her home she took off to barn on 3 legs and i couldnt catch her, she started eating and thriving. So my local vet gave me exceed and IV gent and constant dressing changes. Note, I leased the mare out this injury did not happen with me or at my house .

| I had one with a lesion last year...good luck to you! They're all different. He had about 5 months off, and brought back VERY slowly. He tripped a LOT on that front leg jogging. So built up just jogging one lap a day, then 2, etc. He still has a gnarly scar, and scar tissue built up there. But he's sound now! (well, sound from THAT injury, haha). Just play it by ear, try not to have any expectations, hugs to you! |

We have small lots and I put mine out there so they still had outside time. They can walk around but theres not enough room to play. It sucks keeping them up! |

| My other horse probably has an abcess. Best news today!!!
My gelding's injury is a grade 2 on his DEEP flexor tendon. It happened on Tuesday and his swelling is all gone today so the vet said that was great. |
