If you were looking at an OTT QH. 2 yo, gelding.
3 outs but didn't quite keep up with the hard finishers.
What would be most important things to check in a pre-purchase on a guy like that?
He's big too. Doesn't look like a 2 yo. Clean runs.

I would want to especially pay attention to the knees and fetlocks (take radiographs even if sound), I would also want to have him scoped to see if there is a glaring upper respiratory reason for him to not be able to keep up (laryngeal paralysis, displaced soft palate, epiglottic entrapment etc). If you have intentions of using him as a barrel horse it wouldn't be a bad idea to get some hock films as well as front feet, all depends on how much you are willing to spend on your pre-purchase :)

thanks barrelracingchick! great advice.
He was right there with the pack but not able to close hard and win. But I have "lungs" on my list. wasn't sure the proper way to test that. Scoping. got it.
I'll take all the advice I can get.  Yes, would be barrel horse down the road.

I bought one identical to yours 2 years ago but mine was 3. We did flex tests and he passed. Still took xrays of front feet and they were clean. THis colt was cheap enough I wasn't going to spend more than he was worth on PPE. It also helps to look up his race record. It will state if he was ever scratched for Vet reasons etc. If you are able, talk to people at the track that interacted with the horse regularly. They can be a wealth of inside knowledge.

Thanks!
I do not know anyone at the track unfortunately.  Wish I did so I could discreetly ask.
His race records don't indicate anything fishy at all. I watched all 3 outs and no obvious issues.
What was your course of action with your 3yo when you brought him home? I'm thinking rest of this year off if I go for this guy.  He's a monster, but I wouldn't be in a hurry or likely on a futurity track.

I should say I'd like to try to figure out the best "bang for my buck" on my pre purchase because the price is not a lot but I do want to cover my bases.
If that helps anyone really nail down the most important things.
Im thinking
   flex test
   respiratory
X-rays in order of importance --- Front Feet, Knees, Hocks, Fetlocks ??? Not all of that but if I had to categorize.

I would x-ray stifles also and see if you can get vet records.
