Regular Posts: 59	This September I'm attending a martha josey clinic for the very first time. I'm curious on how things opporate at the clinic such as how everything goes once I arrive and for the next couple of days. I'm attending a 2 1/2 day clinic. Also what can I do to help my mare drink and eat away from home. This will be the very first time she will be away from home for overnight. My biggest concern is having her drink more than anything. Since it's super hot here and I need my mare to drink as much water as possible. Gatorade is not an option to put in her water. So any advice is helpful to get her to eat and drink at the clinic. Also maybe something to help with stress. I'm thinking of trying Redmond daily gold and the hanging salt block to help as well.

Alternatively I know a lot of folks are using "horse hydrators" now that you hook in between the pump and the hose to filter the water - using that at home and then on the road could give the water a similar taste as well. Honestly if you've never hauled her - try not to make too big a deal out of it. You'll just stress yourself out. Let her do her and just see how she handles it. Or haul her somewhere between now and then and see how it goes. Remember you can't make a horse drink. I've had mine not touch a bucket of water for hours, even after we run, and then I go check on them a couple hours later and they've sucked it all down. I don't typically get worried about it as long as all other vital signs and personality is normal until it's been 12-16 hours. Obviously if other signs of stress are present it's a different story. I have had good luck with Jailbreak GI from Oxygen and Equisure to get one to drink if they arent consuming enough on their own.

Expert Posts: 1280 Location: Texas	Use an electrolyte in the feed, but also use an electrolyte paste. It will really make a big difference in getting them to drink. Not eating can be result of stress>>ulcers. It can happen in 1 day. I used the gastroplex paste to help prevent problems while trailering & staying away from home. There is so much to say about Josey's, it would take up the whole page. Is there a specific question that you have?

Take a Picture Posts: 12842	The water there is well water. It does not have a bunch of chemicals in it like "city" water. It should not be a problem. If you use electrolytes start them now. Feed what you normally feed but make sure you have plenty of hay. Don't make changes at the last minute. Make sure you have plenty of bottled water for yourself. I would go to the clinic but I have some steep entry fees that have to be paid in September. Teachers in TX get paid once a month so that has to be stretched out. I have to establish priorities and since I went to the BACK TO SCHOOL CLINIC last year, a clinic is low on my priority list right now. May run up there on Saturday. Off the Wall Wacky Posts: 2981 Location: Louisiana	My picky drinker drank the water at Josey's just fine. BUT, knowing he is a picky drinker, I always bring "his" water bucket with us. He drinks out of it away from home so much better. If you offer him water in a different bucket, he isn't going to drink it.
