Location: Randolph, Utah | In an older horse. I got this horse a year ago I was told he'd never been injected. IF I was told the truth could he need them now at 19?
I thought by now he would of fused, or needed injections before now. He wasn't ran a ton in the last 10ish years. |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | What you are seeing could simply be nothing more than a function of time and aging in that the amount and viscosity of synovial fluid in the joints tends to decrease causing discomfort or pain. Every individual as to if/when that begins to occur.

Location: New Sharon, IA | Is he lame, stiff or off? Yes he could need them at 19 but not all horses need injections. Some horses need it for fusing between 6-9 years old. Needing them as they get older is totally different from the fusing process. My gelding is 16 this year. He was injected at 8 due to fusing. I didn't inject him again until last fall. Again, not all horses need it though so if your horse is stiff or off, I would take them to a vet for a flex test. |

Some horses never fuse.
If you suspect there is a problem, take him to your lameness vet and check him out. Do xrays at the very minimum.

There are TWO places a hock can be injected...upper and lower. Only ONE of those sections fuse, so a horse can "fuse" and still need hock injections.
There's more than two places to inject hocks. The DIT and TMT are the two joints most commonly injected in horses and both of those can fuse. The PIT and tibiotarsal joints are high motion and do not fuse, and are rarely injected in equine medicine. I think the term "uppers and lowers" was coined because the DIT is above the TMT but they are both low motion joints and both can fuse. But that doesn't mean both will or that both will do it at the same time or to the same level of completion.

| Is he even lame, or showing any soreness at all? I would get a vet check, and if he isn't lame or sore, don't start. Done try to fix it if it ain't broke. |

Obviously he's showing me something, I'm not going to inject just to inject. Something is off but I can't pin point what it is. He'a not wanting to finish 3rd barrel. Loping to the left doesn't want to stay up under himself. He'll get checked and if injections are recommended I'll do them. I'd rather not have to but if it helps help he'll get it. |

Location: Randolph, Utah | Thank you all. I'm calling for an appointment to get him checked. He had a week off and still something isn't right.
I was hoping he'd miraculously feel better. I've owned him a year and he's cost me as much in vet bills as I paid for him. So frustrating! |

Location: Northwest | My old man didn't get injected for the first time until he was 21. I see nothing odd about your horse needing them for the first time at 19. |
