I have a coming 2 year old that I am wanting to put in the best hands that I can afford to get him started correctly.
www.allbreedpedigree.com/LR+a+slick+frenchman

I want them BROKE before they ever go into barrel or roping training. So my question is what do you do with your 2 and 3 year olds.
~ put 30-60 day on them as a 2 year old to get a good foundation on them and then put them back to pasture until they are 3 and then get them going in the direction you want
~ OR do you go on with them as a young 2 yr old and just put them right into barrel training

I want to end up roping and running barrels on him but I want to do it right! I have had HORRIBLE luck with trainers the last few years and want to send him to someone who will put a good foundation on him even maybe work around cattle a little before I really push him into anything.

Does anyone have a good trainer in the Midwest they have used to start colts that you could recommend me?
I have had HORRIBLE luck the last couple of years with trainers.

I just sent my two year old to Victor Munford in Farmington, IA.   So far so good as far as what he's doing with her, and he put her first ride on her about an hour after she stepped off the trailer!   He does things similar to Cody Keller.  He was very patient moving her through her tests and waited for her to get it before moving on.   Now, if a colt didn't have as much groundwork, I would say he'd take his time and do more than he did with my filly,  but she passed her tests so he kept moving forward until he rode her.

I had sent her to Cody Wilson in Parkston, SD.  He breaks colts for Trula Churchill, started Chris Martin's futurity standout, amongst others.  The problem was I sent her off the ranch before I brought her home, and while the owner had said she was stout, she was NOT big enough to be rode.  He put two weeks of ground work on her, saddled, loaded in trailer, standing tied, etc, and she was awesome for coming off the ranch.
Didn't send her back to Cody because he's 10 hours away.  Victor is 20 minutes.

Victor came to me on a recommendation from some very good cutting horse trainers in my area but they are non-pro, so don't take outside horses.  He spent an extra 4 months this winter learning reining and cutting techniques from them.  He also lives right next to Shimek state forest and will trail ride your young one as a part of their training.

Wow, thank you so much! I will defiantly look into him since he is in Iowa. Didn't think I would find any recommendations for my home state, LOL

I will tell you there isn't much on FB for him at all.  I didn't even know he did it, and I had been to his barn for my massage therapy business!  If the cutting horse people hadn't told me, I'd be in the dark still!

Another one is Cody Keller in Iowa.  He does clinics all over the country.
Another one is Chris French, his website is more mule training but he does horses as well.   I've met a horse he's trained and he's a nice 3yo.   He requires 60 days though, so that's why I didn't go with him.  I just wanted a start on my filly, she's on the smaller side.

I've had Monty Bruce put time on a couple of my horses. I highly recommend him. He will put an amazing foundation on your horse and he's so patient. Your horse will come back in really good condition, they are well feed well and they are rode and exposed to a lot. His facility is located in Northwood, Iowa.

Mark and Heidi Gunderson from MN do a wonderful job. I added a video of my colt that I sent to them as an unstarted 2 year old. This video is after 60 days with them.

If you have someone in mind to campaign the horse---I would get there opinion on who they would like to break them.

Christy Durfey from King City, MO ALL THE WAY.... what that woman can do in 30 days is absolutely amazing. I sent my horse to her 18 months ago and am STILL sending her videos, asking for bit advice, and have gone back down there for several tuneups so the $$ went WAY farther than the 30 days. She is also a very successful barrel racer so is able to really set them up for success..

Cody Wilson was mentioned above - he worked on my 7yo FG Daughter this summer. She was a ball of anxiety so he helped completely deprogram her. I cannot say enough good things about Cody - you really can tell he cares about the clients, too. Right now he is breaking one out for me and I am looking forward to getting her back. I watched him ride a few other client horses while I was there and I don't think I could've been more impressed. IMO he is worth the 10 hour drive and I think he is CHEAP considering what other people are getting https://www.facebook.com/april.olson.7146/videos/vb.100017867914877/...

Also mentioned above was Mark and Heidi Gunderson - I have a 3yo coming home from them this week. Highly recommend also! Here is my colt after 30 days: https://www.facebook.com/april.olson.7146/videos/vb.100017867914877/...

I am really liking Cody Wilson and Mark and Heidi Gunderson and the videos I am seeing. I think I will be looking into both of these trainers for sure. Cody Wilson is only 5.5 hrs from me so defiantly not to far for a GOOD trainer for sure AND I like the fact he ropes and trains barrel horses. I like a well diversified trainer. Thank you!

You could try Derek Diedrich in Eldridge, IA. He's a super hand with colts. I wouldn't hesitate to send him one at any level of training. He did some great work on a couple horses I know over the winter/spring time. I'm not sure what his schedule is like right now, he's chasing after The American again on a couple horses soon so you'd have to ask.

Β I start colts. In Oklahoma weather is good most of the year. If want horse hauled get ready. There's a race around close all year. Good vets close and horse shoer. I work cattle on.All go outside. I make my own equipment. That goes with the horse..I only ride four outside horses. More time spent on each one.
