Why don't people when they buy a registered horse not transfer to them? I have been casually looking for anther reg. Quarter horse mare and most of the horses aren't registered to the current owner. Why is this? Not wanting to start a fight but it does bug me.

As long as they have a signed transfer from the previous owner it dont bother me at all.

Agree with this! We get horses in on consignment or a few we've been partners on. We don't take the time or money to transfer if they aren't here to stay. I usually state I have signed transfer though. I try to cover everything in a sale ad.
I usually do the advertising so everything is in my name which wont match a hoses papers

Futurity horses I own and horses I plan to kee are the only things we transfer. If it's a project or something we buy to resale we don't worry about transferring them. I do make sure I have a signed transfer on everything we get it, and sometimes that takes some investigative work- but I'm guilty of not transferring every horse horse on the place.

sometimes it's not worth the money, especially if you're not keeping the horse for long. I didn't transfer one I bought because I didn't want the new style papers, I liked the blue ones better. LOL

a lot of folks are to lazy to do it.

I sold a supremely well bred(well over a mill in dam and sire earnings) about 5 years ago. She is still not been transfered and I sent signed transfers with the filly.

I would love to find her but she has changed hands a couple of times and I have no idea where she is at.

I think people try to save money. If something ever happens to your papers you are pretty much out of luck. It is called taking care of business. I don't sell many. Have had some that were never transferred. I enjoy an AQHA show once in a while and have a couple of broodmares so I have to have them in my name. Also, some of mine are double registered so agin they have to be in my name.

Cause I'm a lazy procrastinator. That's why. Once a buyer owns the horse, they are completely welcome to transfer the critter to their name if they so choose.

Thank you for everyone's response. I get it if you have them for a short period of time. I just like to be able to transfer them to me.

Why do I promptly transfer papers to my name? Well, I'm old. I want to make sure if something happens to me that my horses will be taken care of immediately via my trust....and the trust executor has directions to transfer ownership of all horses immediately to my designated horse person -- if their papers are not in my name, it would be a legal nightmare for the horses to legally go to the person I have designated to receive them with full ownership. That's why I transfer everything. (edited to add: I want my horses to receive care within hours of my demise.... don't want them left with no one feeding or watering them....)

Because I'm lazy.

Seriously though, every time I start to write the check out, hubby brings home another one so I wait. Then I forget. Then the cycle starts over.
