Hey everyone!

So, first things first, I'm aware some time was lost on the first barrel but everything else seems pretty decent in my eyes so that's why I'm coming here!

I barely got her pushed by second barrel, she's now decided to be super ratey at that barrel (hit it the night before at a jackpot as I wasn't ready for her to set up that bad - it's a new thing).

Horse looks like she was flying, so where was all the time lost? Was it just coming a bit too wide into first and stalling on the backside that cost us the time?

Thanks!

She's getting bogged down in the turns and losing all of her forward momentum. Then when she comes out of her turns, it's taking 3 strides before she actually starts running again.

Is it a ground issue or is it a training issue?

Is it a ground issue or is it a training issue?

Probably a little of both. The ground isn't helping as far as her being snappy in the turns go. But she's also over rating and not moving her feet so that's also a training issue. Or it could be soreness. Same with her not running until she gets 3 strides out. That is either ground, soreness or both.

I couldn't see that much because of the dust but it looked pretty good. Are we the only people that water the arena before a barrel race?

I know, it was brutal!

We have had next to no rain this summer so that doesn't help but they did have a water truck... not sure why they didn't flood the arena the night before!

Before you start changing things up, I would wait and see what happens when you make a run on better ground. I'm not one to complain about ground but that ground seriously looked like garbage and I think your mare was having a bit of trouble with it.

I'll try to get the video of the run where we knocked, aside from me not expecting her to rate so hard at 2nd it was a nice run and the ground help up WAY better.

With the barrel series I put on this summer, we watered the arena with an entire water tank of a water tank truck before every race and I still got complaints of the arena being too dry on hot days (90+ degrees and we have no humidity, so it dries quickly)...but it was never as dry as that.

Sorry for the side note, I didn't think your run looked that bad. Yes, wide on first, so that could be cleaned up a bit. But of course you are talking to a person who on her last run, at the end her horse thought the electric eye timer was there to turn like a barrel, LOL.

I agree that her turns were slow. Rather than getting sling-shot of power out of the turn, she had to get herself going again after the turn. Could have just been the ground as it looked a bit deep.  I think ground has been troublesome in a lot of places this year because of the severe drought.

....And after just having to run on GREASY SLICK ground that was OVER-watered at our state show this weekend
I would much rather run in the ground you have.

I agree with the others above.  Looks like she was fighting you on the way around and coming out of the first barrel.  Also looks to me like she wasn't running home after the third at all.  Just a few little things to fix and then she should really be smoking!

To me, especially on second she is pulling herself around the barrel. She sits down and then its like shes climbing with that front end and isn't crossing over and snapping out. Could be ground, could be the new style she has developed. but I would work on her snapping around that barrel, counter-bend her on the backside to get her to work vs run around the barrel.
